What experts are saying about Behavior Adjustment Training
BAT 2.0 is a must-read for anyone who has or works with reactive dogs. For years, dogs all over the world have benefited from the successful philosophies and empowering techniques in BAT, but Grisha Stewart has taken it to the next level. A clear appreciation for the canine experience and easy to follow, practical techniques is what makes BAT 2.0 so beneficial for dogs that experience frustration, anxiety, or fear in any social situation. Stewart gives control back to the dog allowing a delicate balance of freedom, the ability to make choices and safety. I highly recommend BAT 2.0 to anyone who is struggling with a reactive dog or who wants to gain a better understanding of their canine companion.
Victoria Stilwell, author, Train Your Dog Positively (via Twitter)

Grisha Stewart's updated version of BAT is easy to understand with wonderful illustrations and pictures to help the reader visualize the process. One of the things I like most about this book is the attention paid to reading dogs for signs of stress in order to keep the dog as comfortable as possible during setups.
Emily Larlham, dog trainer, seminar presenter, and host of the Kikopup YouTube Channel.

When I ask behavior professionals, What are your eyes for? they enthusiastically reply, To see! But when I ask, What is your behavior for? conference rooms fall silent. In BAT 2.0, Grisha Stewart provides the essential answer to this all-important question: Behavior is to have an effect, that is, to be effective. By safely allowing dogs more control over their own outcomes, especially in challenging conditions where fearful, frustrated, and aggressive behavior is most likely, caregivers will be more successful shaping independent, competent, confident companions.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"BAT 2.0 - nice improvement to an already excellent approach for dealing with reactive dogs." -- Ken Ramirez, Executive Vice-President and Chief Training Officer of Karen Pryor Clicker Training (via Twitter)

Grisha Stewart's updated version of BAT is easy to
understand with wonderful illustrations and pictures to help the reader visualize the process. One of the things I like most about this book is the attention paid to reading dogs for signs of stress in order to keep the dog as comfortable as possible during setups. -- Emily Larlham, dog trainer, seminar presenter, and host of the Kikopup YouTube Channel

I have enjoyed every chapter, every page and every line of the book. I think it is not only original, but breaking new ground in that it strikes a blow for ethical ways of training. I hope it will spread around the world.

I love the pedagogical approach of this book and the focus on how to install a feeling of control in a dog's life, all in all a fundamental recipe if you want your dog to feel safe and happy. It also adds an ability for dogs to predict events, which further strengthens its self-worth and being in control in relevant life situations. Keeping a distance to what triggers the dog and gradually come closer to it - another dog, a human or whatever the dog reacts to - is a training method with documented good results.

What I especially like in BAT 2.0 is something which is often overlooked in dog training, and that is how to use naturally occurring reinforcers: A method based on the "Premack's principle", or the relativity theory of reinforcement. Grisha does a great job of explaining how to use this in dog training.

The chapter "BAT for Puppy Socialization" earns special mention. It is simply excellent! In my opinion everyone who has a puppy, is getting a puppy, or is just interested in how to take care of puppies, should read and learn from this. In fact, it could be a separate book.

The BAT 2.0 book is a star among training concepts and Grisha Stewart has such a nice way of making everything easy to understand. Add her sense of humor to the topic and you have a book that is hard to put down.

-- Anders Hallgren, Animal behaviorist, dog psychologist, Psychologist Msc (Sweden)

Behavior Adjustment Training 2.0 is unique--a living document detailing the evolution of a very effective intervention from the experience of many practitioners. I
loved the practicality of this book, as well as Grisha Stewart's dedication to giving dogs a voice in their own development! This is must-reading for those working with dog reactivity in its many forms.--Risë VanFleet, Ph.D., CDBC Author, The Human Half of Dog Training: Collaborating with Clients to Get Results

From the Author

Thanks for checking out my book! I wrote most of it while camping in Alaska with my dog, Peanut and finished up editing with puppy Bean in tow.

The
BAT 2.0 book replaces the need to read the old one, because the technique is very different now.  It's easier to understand and has even more focus on empowerment and stress reduction. I started with the old book as my foundation, but changed pretty much every sentence and added something like 100 more pages.

So unless you just want to compare BAT 1.0 and 2.0, save yourself the expense and
only get the new book. Look for me on Facebook if you have questions about it.

BAT is a great way to rehabilitate dog reactivity (aggression, frustration, fear), but it's also really useful for puppy socialization and everyday life with all dogs.
BAT is more than a technique - it's a lifestyle for everyone with dogs.

Best dog training book ive found so far. Though i should mention that skips a few important thoughts, in that avoiding the triggers might not always be possible and that you must clearly inform your dog when you disapprove of their behavior. The book focuses more on assuming you can follow the methodology to never get in a situation where your dog behaves unacceptably, but forgets to describe the proper response to how you should react to such situations. Other than that, great book, much more readable than the first edition. A bit dense, though maybe thats just because im reading two editions. Dense is good though, has some really good and detailed ideas. First edition lacked some details about all the strategies it alluded to, but this version details everything. Another item this book lacks is up close training details. Focuses mostly on reactivity at a distance, but lacks clear focus on up close reactivity issues. The intelligent reader can apply the concepts in the book to such, but it's not really described as detailed as it should. For example, she can try to generalize keeping the dog below the threshold up close, having both dogs wear muzzle, and describe tactics for working in up close situations like in which aggression is common for dogs that have guarding issues only very up close.

Just started reading this behavior book as I have two Australian Sheperds . A 9 year old and a 1 year old. The older dog is very obedient and was easy to train. As a matter a fact he new exactly one I would ask of him. Very smart intelligent dogs. Very loyal too. The youngest dog is a little more bouncy and wants to be the boss. She is getting a lot better with one on one training every single day. Very smart she is. so far I got a few tips from this amazing book. Very interesting reading. Thanks so much.

I found the book extremely useful for my reactive dog. My dog became reactive towards dogs due to a negative experience with another dog. He didn't get hurt but the less than 10 second experience was traumatic enough for him to change and become anxious and fearful towards other dogs. In his mind, that incident concluded that all dogs are bad and a danger to him. I was already familiar with positive training methods but I turned to this book as another resource, as another tool to use for my dog. I appreciated the author's detail about dog behavior and the reasoning behind her methods. I read the book from start to finish first and then I started implementing the methods on our daily walks. I find that practice makes perfect and changing my dog's behavior and providing him with choices and the tools he needs to feel safe takes time and patience. There were times when my timing was off or I had to adjust the distance accordingly, or I was progressing too fast for what was comfortable for my dog. I made sure I took the time to make the adjustments as necessary. This isn't a quick fix book or something that you see results within a day or 2 with. It takes time as you adjust and as your dog adjusts. For us, it took us over a year but he's a much happier and far less anxious dog. He is much more confident and knows that he has the tools to adjust as necessary to keep him in the safe zone.

A total paradigm shift when thinking about dog training and behavior. There's a lot of bad advice out there, but Grisha Stewart cuts through all of that with clear language, excellent pedagogy, and good evidence to back up her claims (it's based in decades of behavioral research). I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It has already started to create positive change in my dogs' lives and I have total faith that it will continue to do so as I implement the full model.

I have a lot of dog training books but now that my husband is doing training at our local dog rescue he was looking for other books to read. He saw this book on Amazon & thought this would fill in what was missing from my books & he said it was perfect. He is now working with all the dogs at the rescue & trying to help them become good canine companions so they will be more "adoptable". It's working! The book offers some very good techniques especially for rescues who come with lots of baggage.

I would not recommend this book for the common dog owner. It is written for dog trainers and reads like a science text book.
We are having trouble with resource guarding with our dog. After reading the first four chapters, I checked the index. Resource guarding is supposed to be addressed on page 231, but it’s actually Horse Training and The Evolution if BAT. Not helpful at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book
Reviewed in Canada on October 25, 2017
Great book, really helps you understand what your dog is going through and how to help him. Some great photo charts in there. Her protocol is a lot of work to actually do to get your dog less reactive, but it works. You’ll likely need to hire a professional still to help you or at least have another person or 2 help. Quite the commitment to carry through this plan but even if you’re not able to dedicate this amount of time/effort, it still helps you understand why your dog is reactive. She is also in the school of thought of positive reinforcement 🙂

5.0 out of 5 stars Geniales Buch für den Umgang mit ängstlichen, frustrierten und agressiven Hunde
Reviewed in Germany on February 3, 2019

The speakers pop out within a couple of minutes so be careful. It is very tough and wonderful for filling with frozen food to keep the jaws chewing. A fair price for a long lasting toy. Not sure about the beef flavour being in it.

I agree with reviews that say setting up the practice with someone else and their dog is not practical. However the material on reading your dog and biting thresholds is excellent and helped my dog enormously. The softer approach has been more effective.
