This Broadside will look at the changes that can be made to halt the full implementation of the law over the next few years, including repealing parts of the act that are unpopular with members of both parties. These parts are the medical device tax, IPAB, the new 3.8 percent tax on unearned income, to name a few.

Also covered will be potential reforms to Medicare and Medicaid, two major entitlement programs that, if not reformed to ensure sustainability for those who really need these programs, will be bankrupt by 2024.
There are a number of important lawsuits that will come before the courts this year on issues such as the exchanges, employer and individual mandates, and the contraception mandate. These will be highlighted and their potential impact on the law will be discussed.

Finally, there is the issue of defunding the Medicaid expansion and the federal tax subsidies which, unless changed, will add tremendously to the cost of health care in this country. With the current fiscal crisis, these programs must be scaled back.

Like welfare reform, the battle to bring about meaningful health care reform is a long-term fight. We must not give up. The election of 2016 will be very important for the future direction of health care. A reform plan will be offered. If Obamacare is not repealed and replaced, the U.S. will be on the road to a single-payer, “Medicare for All” system such as exists in Canada. We, too, will face long waiting lists, rationed care, and a lack of access to the latest technology and treatments. Examples will be given. America will be on the “Road to Serfdom” and there will be no off-ramp.

"The Cure for ObamaCare" by Sally Pipes was written in 2013 before the law took full effect. It is very short, and this booklet can be read in about an hour. Pipes explains key features of the law and the deleterious effect it is having on medicine, private insurance, and our nation's finances. She looks at some of the court challenges to the law, some of which are still pending.

Pipes suggests a conservative replacement plan for ObamaCare that would truly expand access and lower costs. The author closes the booklet with a debunking of the notion that the Canadian health care system is better than and more humane than ours, providing statistics and two tragic examples from her own family north of the border showing that socialized medicine is no panacea. "The Cure for ObamaCare" provides a quick critique of the law and good suggestions for its replacement.

The book accurately describes the problems with the law -- the mandates, the crackdown on insurance profitability, the penalties on pharmaceutical companies and medical device manufacturers, the shut-down of medical innovation, the financial risks faced by doctors, hospitals, and states who adopt Medicaid expansion.

Some needed changes:

1) reverse deductions for medical expenses
2) raise FSA limits
3) eliminate Obamacare's marriage penalties and Medicare taxes
4) repeal medical device manufactirer's taxes
5) repeal IPAB
6) pay physicians

Obamacare should be repealed and replaced with a reasonable system of open insurance markets across all states, an elimination of coverage mandates, and equalizing of the tax treatment of employer-based and individual insurance. Establish government high-risk pools to take care of the (seemingly quite few) uninsured people who are too sick to get insurance -- there's your safety net.

Sally C. Pipes did a good job with this book. That doesn't make the situation less depressing, but it is refreshing to read a well-written summary (52 pages) of the road ahead.

I appreciate the effort to keep this factual review of Obamacare brief. However, its main fault was it may have been too concise. But still, this whole topic is still very troubling for our country's future.

The "Cure" points are great and well presented and it is done in a short format. This book contains well formed suggestions as a cure to our health care financing by a individual who has studied this issue extensively.
