Hailed as “one of the most significant books ever published,” this work of far-reaching vision is a comprehensive exploration of the evolution of human consciousness

In this tour de force of scholarship and vision, Ken Wilber traces the course of evolution from matter to life to mind and describes the common patterns that evolution takes in all three of these domains. From the emergence of mind, he traces the evolution of human consciousness through its major stages of growth and development.

Wilber particularly focuses on modernity and postmodernity: what they mean; how they impact gender issues, psychotherapy, ecological concerns, and various liberation movements; and how the modern and postmodern world conceive of Spirit. This second edition features forty pages of new material, new diagrams, and extensively revised notes.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A timely and bold wake-up call for humanity."—San Francisco Chronicle

"Hugely informed, outspoken, and deeply illumined, Ken Wilber's penetrating insights uplevel the whole game of understanding human beings and human history."—
Branches of Light

"The scope of the work is extraordinary. Only a handful of thinkers, such as Aurobindo in the East and Hegel in the West, have assembled such vast evolutionary visions. Yet Wilber's view is unique not only in providing a far-reaching vision but also in grounding that vision in contemporary research in fields such as cosmology, biology, anthropology, sociology, psychology, and ecology."—Roger Walsh,
Resurgence

"Wilber possesses the rare combination of a deep, advanced spiritual practice with a sharp wit, brain power and scholarship to rival the finest Princeton Ph.D. . . .
Sex, Ecology, Spirituality rewards the reader with a comprehensive, nondualistic, and sophisticated analysis of our world and consciousness."—Green Living

"Wilber's book is essential reading as a transplanetary survey of our problems and our possibilities. This is a book to live with for the next five years, and carry with you long into the next century."—David Boadella,
Journal of Family Life

"Wilber is without a doubt one of the most significant thinkers of our time and brings a fresh understanding to our cultural situation and the prospects for an integral worldview in the next century. He displays a staggering erudition . . . a profound intuitive understanding and a highly developed analytical capacity. The combination is breathtaking. . . . Any thinker concerned with the big picture will find Wilber's work a gold-mine of insights which make compulsory reading for the 21st century."—
Network: The Scientific and Medical Network Review

"Exhaustive exploration of the history of consciousness."—
Parabola

"I think the most significant recent development in the field [of Transpersonal Psychology] is the publication of Ken Wilber's book,
Sex, Ecology, Spirituality . I would encourage anyone interested in exploring the field in depth to read this volume."—Gnosis Magazine

"The twenty-first century literally has three choices: Aristotle, Nietzsche, or Ken Wilber. This book, written with remarkable scholarly breadth and depth, is exactly the medicine we need for the new century and the new millennium: not because it will make us feel good, which it surely might, but because it can jolt us awake."—Jack Crittenden, Ph.D., author of
Beyond Individualism

I believe Ken Wilber spent five years researching the material for this book, and it shows. I read the 2nd edition eighteen years ago in paperback, and came back for the 1st edition in hardcover. Still many things to learn, even on a second reading.

Have not read it yet, but I have been wanting to read it for ten years. One book by Ken Wilber is like taking a doctoral level course in college. I read the introduction and found it interesting, as is everything he writes. I have no doubt that I will enjoy the book immensely. I was glad to see other books by Ken Wilber that I have not read as well and will probably order them in the future. I have almost everything he has ever written.

As usual, Wilber presents a logically-unfolding argument and ties the threads of development together in a weave that illustrates a coherent picture of the human and our place in the interconnected web. I think he is the most important developmental philosopher of the century as, due largely to him, we now have good maps of human psychology-- and the places where its development can go wrong--that are badly needed by the therapeutic psychological arts.
On the other hand, Ken's books remain difficult to read because he is so concerned that his points get instilled, that he repeats/recapitulates his arguments in 10 different ways for each one! I'd give him 5 stars but for this.

This important work deals with deep abstractions in clear, easy-to-follow language, while adding scholarly depth through extensive end notes.

Mind blowing. Ken Wilbur is funny. He is academically accurate and discusses complex philosophical issues with great clarity and without watering down the subject. He builds a case for everything he suggests and bashes various points of view, without bashing the values behind the views. Feminists, ecology advocates, and in fact, the entire western civilization and devastated by Wilbur with pointed criticisms of where they veered off course.

This is Wilber's magnum opus with extraordinary depth and scope, covering many topics, from evolution, the Four Quardrants to the four stages of Spiritual development. ...The next step: getting a direct dialogue going with KW and the other great genius of our time: Peter Baofu.

Patience to digest everything in this book was necessary for me. The book made a great deal of sense to me and what I sense are my spiritual beliefs at this point in time. It's good to have a dictionary handy if you are unfamiliar with studying this kind of information.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great behemoth of a book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 19, 2016
This is Ken Wilber's magnum opus, a great behemoth of a book, tremendous in energy and ambition. It might help if before attempting it you have read one or other of his simpler introductions to Integral thought, or perhaps the Ken Wilber Reader. But (being basically on his side) I found this an exhilarating read...brilliant from beginning to end, opinionated, argumentative, and hope-giving. The footnotes alone are worth the price of the book. Wonderful, though not for the faint-hearted.
