Review
"Although this book is unmistakably targeted to physicians recently out of residency, it will appeal to the broader audience of the not-so-new attending physicians and residents in training. With its real-world bent and modest approach, it offers a bit of a review and opportunities for introspection while not being pedantic or obscured by data. In short, this is a fun read that will benefit many emergency physicians."- Annals of Emergency Medicine

About the author
Sajid Khan graduated from a combined 6-year BA/MD program at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. After graduation, he completed his residency in Emergency Medicine. He hosts a website at www.myERdoctor.com. When he's not working shifts or writing books, he can be spotted running with the bulls in Pamplona, dancing with U2 in Dublin, or ziplining in Costa Rica. He dabbles in magic, and has managed to trick the most beautiful woman in the world to marry him. Together they raise their two daughters to be just like her.

Dr. Khan's prose is easy to read (even for those with short attention spans), totally compelling, and covers material that is absolutely vital to a happy successful post-residency practice of emergency medicine. Clinical vignettes are spot on. Professional advice (on finances, shiftwork, and life outside work) is also spot on. I'm very glad that Dr. Khan took the time out to write this book. It puts in one place many things that are must-knows for all emergency physicians. These took me several decades to understand myself. If I'd had this book as a senior resident, I'd certainly have been saved a lot of pain.
Here's one of my favorite passages (regarding those who want to practice academic medicine) and something I also can confirm from my own experience: "You are truly lost in trying to prepare anyone for the real world of medical practice unless you've been in that same world, in a busy community ED, for at least five to ten years... So if you want to teach, practice first."
Bottom line: great book, must read for new emergency physicians, well worth the price. JUST BUY IT.
