A page-turner. A true tale of wickedness, despair, and redemption. Not to be missed.

Born into a Dark and Secretive World of Domestic Violence

”What kind of life is this you live? Can you remember even one day you didn’t go to bed afraid and wake up afraid?”
These are the words Jena Parks says, looking in the mirror as a child.
Imagine being a child and every day a desperate struggle to survive. This was the life Jena endured from birth until the day she escaped the living nightmare of her father’s abuse.
In
The Fear of the Blow, Jena tells her candid personal story of the cruelty, abuse, and terror her father inflicted upon her, her brother, and her mother. She provides an insider perspective on the horrors of domestic violence and child abuse that inform and inspire the reader to help those who struggle.

Unthinkable Horrors - a True-Life Story

From the opening passages, Parks tells us of being witness to spousal abuse as her father would hit and kick her mother. She then begins to recount stories of her father’s “games” in which he would routinely nearly strangle his children.
Verbal and physical beatings were a daily occurrence. Jena lived in terror of her father’s rage, often made worse by his alcoholism.
She tells of the delight he would take in threatening to kill her or her mother.

How Could This Kind of Domestic Abuse Continue Unchallenged?

Parks helps the reader to understand how domestic violence can take root and go unchallenged for years - often until too late.
She reminds us that child abuse, spousal abuse, and domestic violence thrive in silence - and that they form the most secretive and horrific epidemics known today.
It is through educating ourselves about the reality of domestic violence that we can gain insight into the extensive and crippling effects on the children who are born into and raised inside of that dark world. And this empowers us to speak up and take action to help those in need.
The Fear of the Blow is sure to break your heart, open your mind, and inspire courage and faith.

Join the Fight to Raise Awareness

Jena Parks is a committed to raising awareness about the prevalence of Domestic Violence and Child Abuse. She has written The Fear of the Blow in the hope of empowering others to speak up and to find a safe way out before it's too late.
Because Child Abuse and Domestic Violence thrive in the silence please join Jena on her mission to shine a light on this epidemic. The only way we can stop it is to reveal it, to stand up and tell the truth, tell our stories and create real change in a still broken system that traps so many helpless women and children inside this Russian roulette life.
Jena’s experiences expose the extreme cruelty and wickedness of which some are capable, but also points you to the place where one can always find hope and a safe harbor.

While I found this a very difficult read in terms of how horrific the abuse Jena suffered at the hands of her own father; I believe it to be an important and necessary read for anyone who has ever suffered abuse or a dysfunctional family dynamic. There is much to be learned here for those seeking to gain a better understanding of what victims of domestic violence go through on a daily basis - how their lives are primarily centered around survival rather than "living." It's tragic and upsetting, but if we really care to delve into this silent epidemic and find better answers for its victims and survivors then we have to be willing to read real-life experiences like this one. Jena Parks did a great job pulling the reader into her world and I applaud her efforts here. The Fear of the Blow is very well written and offers something many books covering this topic do not; a real-time child's perspecitve as the abuse unfolds. I tend to think of domestic violence issues from a battered woman's viewpoint but this had a much greater impact on me because it's told from the perspective of the child and what they suffer through day to day and year to year.

This is certainly an emotional and hard book to read. The topic of family domestic abuse is tough, and most people shy away from it. And this is exactly why it is so prevalent in our country and is able to go on for so long in many households. What this book does is gives the reader a inside story of someone who grows up in a house where all family members are being terrorized by one, in this book it’s the father. Verbal, emotional, physical, all types of abuse is heaped upon the wife, son and daughter for years before they are able to escape.
Gaining this insight about how this abuse is enabled to go on and on will be effective in helping us all speak out when we see something happening and hopefully this book will be able to save some lives. I really liked the book. I cannot like the story other than that it is an accurate portrayal of what can go on in an abusive household. But it was well written and the resources that are given are great in giving us a reference point in where to go when we need it.

This is a remarkable story. Jena Parks is incredibly strong to be able to put her story into words to share her experience, bring awareness, and help others. The way in which the stories are written is both beautiful and inspiring. Jena wrote them so that they both express looking back at her life of trauma and telling them from the perspective of her childhood self. The stories that she includes are difficult to read as they portray the harsh realities of abuse. What I felt to be the most heartbreaking was reading just how much Jena as a young child understands of what is happening. From how she tries to calm her father down, to how she knows why her mother cannot leave the situation. It was truly heartbreaking to read this, but I found it to be both inspiring and important to know. While I believe this book is definitely worth the read, I would say that if you are triggered by any of these intense subjects read with care. I would highly recommend this book.

This book is so emotional. It makes you empathize and become emotional with the characters of the book. This book is well written and edited. There are a couple of misses but very few. I think there needs to be one more book where Jena tells how her adult life and her brothers life turned out. Did they break the cycle of violence. The father was vile and I agree with her conclusions about her father and God. He loves all his children even the ones who do vile things to their families. He gives everyone an opportunity to change. Even though it pains me to reconcile to that fact.

This book really got to me emotionally. The Fear of the Blow: A Young Woman's Gut-Wrenching Story of Child Abuse, Domestic violence, Alcoholism and Redemption by Jena Parks is a true story about the author’s personal life growing up. She writes about watching her mother and brother be abused by her father, as well as being abused herself. It is a very sad tale that helps to bring to light the reality of what children experience when they are born into domestic abuse in the house. I think the author did a fantastic job at portraying her emotional experiences and showing people how things may not always be as they seem. Jena's father was a polite and well-civilized person in public, but in private he was abusive and mean and even threatened to kill her and her mother. It is very important to realize that everything is not as simple as what meets the eye. He was an alcoholic and his anger just grew worse as he drank. This story is very sad and heartbreaking, but it is also a story of great redemption. Jena continuously prayed to God as a child and He helped her to feel safe through everything that was happening. Now, as an adult, she advocates for children and women in similar situations to what she experienced as a child. She has been able to take her highly unfortunate experiences and turn them around to use them for good in helping others. I HIGHLY recommend this book and feel like it was well-worth the read.

The Fear of the Blow: A Young Woman's Gut Wrenching Story of Child Abuse, Domestic violence, Alcoholism and Redemption by Jena Parks is not a book for the timid. This is an excruciating and horrendous tale of terror which is completely heartbreaking. The author takes us on an unequaled journey through her eyes, and we truly feel all of the emotions that she feels. While this is somewhat difficult to read, as it details horrific actions, there is a glimmer of hope here for victims to come out of bad situations and regain their lives. A compelling story that is very well written, this book will make you cry with it's honesty, and hopefully cheer on all women who find themselves in unfortunate situations to get a little courage, rebuild their lives and move on to something bigger and better. Very inspiring and a motivational read for sure.

A well told a account of a girl's abusive childhood. It makes you feel the tension and fear that she and her family felt and I was willing them on to get out of there and make a change. Will look for the next book now to find out how Jena's adult life unfolds. I am sure,we will see a movie made in the not too distant future.

I really enjoyed this book. Jena has outed her life story out and it can’t have been easy. I can’t imagine living in that constant state of anxiety and fear. So glad it ended for you, was waiting all the way through for that part of the story. Thank you for sharing your life and you and your mum and brother are an inspiration xx
