Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) affects the connective tissues; the joint and skin problems are due to issues with collagen, proteins that stabilize the connective tissue and give it elasticity. Prior to 1997, there were 10 recognized types of EDS which were classified by Roman numerals (e.g. EDS I , II and III), but this has now been simplified to six major types. Each type has its own features. For example, the vascular type of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome carries an increased risk of organ rupture, including tearing of the aorta and rupture of the uterus (womb) during pregnancy. All types have some effect on the joints. Symptoms may first show up during the childhood years, although some newborns with certain subtypes are diagnosed with EDS. If symptoms are mild, the disorder may not be diagnosed until the adult years. This informative and concise book guides you through the causes, tests, and treatment options for EDS.

I’m learning about my condition and this is one of my tools.

There isn't much to this book, I expected it to be a lot thicker. It's only 83 pages, and that's in large print and it's not a "full size" book either.
The copyright is for 2014, and the table of contents only includes the 6 known types from then. But then in the "Causes" section, it lists out the new types from the 2017 diagnostic criteria change.
The section on differential diagnoses looks like it was pasted straight from a wikipedia page.
There are a lot of spelling and grammar errors.
The whole book feels like someone threw it together to just make money off of us EDS patients who are desperate for information on treatments we can pursue. But the actual "treatments" section is very short.
This is a waste of your money.

Not as helpful as Id thought it would be. But i want to give it to my next doctor to read. There isnt nearly enough awareness about EDS

Helpful and has current information on EDS. Gave some information in other genetic disorders too!

What I realized is the information is still changing and getting updated.

Way too basic, not much of a resource book at all. I do not recommend this book at all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good beginner book

This is a good solid overview of EDS. It could have benefited from better layout and editing (the title on the cover has a typo - it's Ehlers Danlos, sections and subsections are distinguished by the same bold type headings which is somewhat confusing), and the cover is awful IMO. Nevertheless I recommend it to anyone with a recent diagnosis. I'd wager some of the web resources I've seen have sourced their info from this book (given consistency of writing style in the book I don't think it's the other way around). One part I've not seen elsewhere (as thorough) is brief descriptions of potentially comorbid conditions. It isn't a long book, but that may make it more helpful as a book to pass around to family, share with teachers, etc as it demands less time.
