For a boy coming of age during the 1930s and ’40s, Greenville, Alabama, a small cotton-farming town in the Deep South, was a wonderfully rich environment. Greenville may have been small, but for author Clifton K. Meador, MD, life growing up there was anything but dull. In his memoir Sketches of a Small Town…circa 1940, Meador lovingly retells the stories that formed his values and shaped his life. For young Clifton and his friends, there’s plenty of trouble to stir up, ranging from a field fire, to buzzard hunting, to fights between the “country boys” and the “city boys,” and, of course, girls. There are also poignant moments, such as the loss of his best friend because of the impenetrable wall of segregation. And there are quirky characters—the town’s sole, somewhat frightening taxi driver; the intriguing, cross-dressing homosexual; and the eccentric agronomy professor turned failed farmer. Sketches of a Small Town…circa 1940 not only tells one man’s story, but also beautifully captures the remarkable people, places, and events that characterized a unique lifestyle in a bygone era. “What we have here is a poignant, very funny, yet respectful look back at small-town life and characters in the Deep South in the ’30s and ’40s, pre-prosperity, before it was a recognized condition. Meador is a Mark Twain without the river and a Garrison Keillor without the snow... and Baptists instead of Lutherans. I loved this book.” —Harold Chambliss - freelance writer, humorist, and former magazine publisher

Step Back In Time And Glimpse A Bit of Small Town Life

Step Back In Time And Glimpse A Bit of Small Town Life
Memoirs always interest me because it gives you an opportunity to see things through another person's eyes, to see events from their perspective. It is fascinating to read someone else's thoughts about an event or a period of time. Seeing things from another point of view, especially from someone that personally experienced it, can afford you the opportunity to expand your understanding and appreciation. I received Sketches Of A Small Town to review. I was interested in reading Dr. Meador's book because Alabama has a rich history and he was someone that experienced a small piece of it firsthand. This is a fascinating journey through Dr. Meador's childhood and early adolescence. It is at times charming, sad, nostalgic, funny and thoughtful. In a town full of very different people, a picture is painted of those people caring for their neighbors and living together in relative calm.As the title says, this book offers sketches of what life was like for a boy growing up in a small Alabama town. Sketches is an apt words because owing to his youth, Clifton saw things through his child eyes. Those eyes most likely weren't privilege to more in depth complexities that likely surrounded him. All the same, the sketches are wonderful glimpses into a time a lot of us never knew and may not understand. His memories are beautiful reminders of days gone by, of people knowing their differences and living in relative calm despite them. He doesn't gloss the memories over and make them "the good old days" and isn't apologetic for the way things were, but instead lets us see the town for what it was and the people for who they were. While the people and the town weren't perfect, Dr. Meador paints a picture that makes me wish I could step back in time and stroll though Greenville and meet these folks who were part of the fabric that made up our Country. You find yourself caring for these people and wondering what happened them.Sketches of a Small Town is a generous look back in history to a time when things were perhaps simpler only because technology as we know it was not even a dream yet. Simpler because everything wasn't supersized and time moved slower somehow. Despite the simple appearance, Dr. Meador also shows the complexities of living in a small town in a bygone era. It's a wonderful first hand account of the history of a small southern town.

One of my favorite book friends totally loved this book and it went in my stack without another thought. Memoirs always fascinate me because it gives you an opportunity to see things through another person's eyes and to see the matter from their point of view. It is enticing to read someone else's line of thinking about an event or a period of time, especially from someone that personally experienced it. It gives you the freedom to lengthen your admiration and interpretation.

This is a captivating journey through Clifton Meador's childhood and young adulthood. It is at times delightful, nostalgic, gloomy, funny and sentimental. The book is a series of stories about his young manhood in a small rural town, Greenville, Alabama, during the depression and WW II years. This compilation of stories engages in such a way that the reader is reconnected to the value of face to face relationships and the magnitude of time and place. Meador passionately reiterates the stories that laid the foundations of his values and influenced his life. There are also heart-rending moments such as the loss of his best friend because of the impenetrable wall of segregation. The book is an enjoyable, touching trip back in time, a journey of the heart and an experience that sticks around.

I adored the book tremendously. Meador has a special gift for story-telling, especially true and timeless stories. It was an honest, well-written look at another time long gone in southern history. Anyone who grew up in a small town in this time or whose parents did will love the stories. I found myself laughing out loud so many times. I could just picture the characters that he wrote about and appreciate everything about it. This book has a fresh view to share and held my attention from beginning to end and left me wanting for more. What a fun way to embrace the nostalgic feelings this book offers to the reader! I absolutely cannot imagine any reader who would not love reading this book. Highly recommend!

Dr. Meador's new book "Sketches of a Small Town" draws you into his life and life in general in 'small town Alabama.' Excellent books have been written about this town, Greenville, Alabama and small towns in general. This book has a fresh view to share and held my attention from beginning to end and left me wanting for more. His memory much be way greater than mine. His memories are vivid and historically correct. Good reading if you want to experience life in the south in the 'old days.'

Clifton Meador's "Sketches of a Small Town...circa 1940" is cause for celebration. As a memoir, it succeeds admirably by combining vivid "local color" writing with a heart warming "coming of age" story. Meador's writing sparkles, and his nimble sense of humor is in full display. Character's step off the pages, places and scenes appear in sharp relief, and telling details about the human condition abound. Readers who enjoyed Russell Baker's "Growing Up" and Ferrol Sams' trilogy on southern life will love Clifton Meador's "Sketches of a Small Town...circa 1940." I don't know when I have enjoyed a book so much. A stunning contribution to the story teller's art, it left me helpless with admiration.

As a Greenville, AL native myself, I had such fun reading about and recognizing the characters and places. While some of his info is incorrect, such as stating that Planters is now torn down and the map of G'ville is pretty much wrong across the board, so much else is spot on. In fact, according to Clifton, his first love over whom his heart was broken was actually my first cousin! And my grandfather, whom the author states never smiled, was, indeed, a very solemn man.

I enjoyed the book immensely. In fact, readers who grow up in other small Southern towns can find their own memories of similar characters and settings.

A great memoir answers, "What was it really like to be there?" In Sketches of a Small Town, Clifton Meador answers that question and goes well beyond to share the world of Greenville, Alabama in the 1930's and '40's. In a sincere and loving tribute to the town that spawned him, Meador takes the reader on a journey that is not to be forgotten. Readers will ponder all that was good and some that was not so good in this honest, superbly written love letter to a small Southern town.

Well done. It evokes memories for all of us who lived in small towns in that era. At the same time it provides some insight on the culture and fears that existed then and serves as a contrast and basis for the changes that have occurred since then. Quick read for short time intervals available for reading. Each sketch can stand alone but there is much interrelationship among them.

I grew up in Pine Apple (two words not one as it appears in the book) which is about 25 miles west of Greenville . I came along a little later than the time setting of this book. I went to school my senior year and graduated from Greenville High School in 1968. I found Dr. Meador's description of small town life very interesting.

My father was one of the "country boys" about 10 years older than Dr. Meador. He used to tell me about practicing football then running home 5 miles in the country after practice. The book made me remember stories he told me about growing up in this small town. One of the stories he told was about taking a wagon apart and reassembling it on top of the high school.
