If you want to solve your problems with sleep and insomnia using the same health system that was applied for the best ever known clinical trials on cancer and asthma, this is the right page and the right book. The Buteyko breathing method is based on the idea that slower and lighter breathing results in better health and dramatically improves quality of sleep and overall health. Long: If you want to solve your problems with sleep and insomnia using the same health system that was applied for the best ever known clinical trials on cancer and asthma, this is the right page and the right book. The Buteyko breathing method is based on the idea that slower and lighter breathing results in better health and dramatically improves quality of sleep and overall health. Hundreds of modern book promote a fable that the human body and mind recover at rest and especially during sleep. However, dozens of clinical studies and surprising science prove again and again that chances of acute attacks (exacerbations due to heart attacks, strokes, seizures, asthma attacks and many other health problems) are highest during sleep. Thus, the secret world of sleep is totally different from what one may expect. This book provides a systematic analysis of sleep-related lifestyle factors based on clinical experience of the Buteyko breathing practitioners and more than 160 Soviet Buteyko doctors. Here are the major clinical findings related to this new effortless sleep method that has been tested on 1,000s of patients: Severely sick and hospitalized people * Respiratory frequency during sleep: >26 breaths/min * Body oxygenation (result for the CP test): <10 s * Quality and duration of sleep: Often >10 hours, very poor sleep quality. Majority of modern people * Respiratory frequency during sleep: 15-26 breaths/min * Body oxygenation (result for the CP test): 10-25 s * Quality and duration of sleep: Often >8 hours, poor sleep quality. Healthy people (medical norms for breathing) * Respiratory frequency during sleep: 12 breaths/min * Body oxygenation (result for the CP test): 40 s * Quality and duration of sleep: Often 6 hours, good quality of sleep. People in super health states * Respiratory frequency during sleep: 3-5 breaths/min * Body oxygenation (result for the CP test): 2-3 minutes * Quality and duration of sleep: 2-3 hours (naturally and without trying), ideal effortless sleep. You can say good night to insomnia, calm your mind with real rest, and sleep much better and less naturally if you slow down your breathing during sleep back to the medical norm.

I have completed the Buteyko training quite a few years ago but stopped practicing at some stage. Read the Oxygen Advantage book as a result of a recommendation by Dr Mercola. After realising the benefits of the breathing technique for my health journey, started practicing the Buteyko training again. Then came across this book by Artour Rakhimov and it gave me almost a whole new dimension of knowledge about the benefits to be obtained from the training. This has been very motivating to continue the practice.

Almost everything in this book goes against everything I thought I knew. As is often the case, popular knowledge about breathing and sleep seems to be diametrically opposed to what medical science tells us. Dr Artour Rakhimov takes us on a tour of existing Western medical research as well as the dramatic discoveries of Russian doctors, starting with the earliest space flights. I think this is one of the reasons Russia was first in space...
I have been observing my sleep and breathing since reading this book and now I understand why I feel like crap (and more tired) if I lie down too long on the couch, or sleep too long, or why I hit a wall when I start to mouth breathe when exercising.

The role of CO2 is very clearly explained and just knowing that one thing, it helps me understand a lot of things about how my body works and how to make sure I don't run my body down with incorrect breathing. What I learned in everyday yoga classes is pretty much wrong, but the secret breathing techniques learned directly from a yoga master completely confirm this information. Funny how that works...

While this book does not contain breathing exercises, I found lots of free info on Artour's website to get me started.

This stuff just makes sense, get the book and fix your sleep and breathing now! :)

Bizarre. Some things I plain disagree with. For example you are recommended not to sleep on your back because doing so encourages shall chest breathing. For me it does nothing of the sort. You can try it for your self. The chest is (for me at any rate) always expanded in this position and takes no part in respiration.

Secondly there are complicated instructions about binding yourself up before going to sleep, to avoid chest breathing, but could you ever sleep like this ? I couldn't.

There may be advantages in the way of breathing proposed but I couldnt see them from this book.

Like all the other books of this author this one's also a must-read. The book is dedicated to the buteyko breathing therapy and focuses on the connection between sleep and optimum breathing parameters. The information within is not well-known in the West, but scientifically irrefutable. If you have problems falling asleep or if you are not refreshed after sleeping, this book provides strategies to solve this problems. My own experience with the buteyko therapy - I studied and applied the other works of mr. Rakhimov and can only highly recommend them - is that much progress can be achieved by physical exercise, especially when done using the Training Mask.

I wish I had more time to write this review, but I wanted to get something positive down about this book. I think the most important thing to know about this book is that the information in it cannot be found anywhere else. I have read many books on the Buteyko "method" of breathing and I can say with certainty that this one has some very unique and helpful information in it.

This book is unbelievable. The author is a very educated russian doctor. He gives scientific proven and understandable information about breathing and sleeping. In my case it led to the ability to fall asleep in minutes. Besides i sleep much less now too (less than 5 hours!), although my energy level during the day is super high. It has all to do with the oxygenation during sleep. The author brought together many of the most effective techniques in this regard. These techniques are not known to most people in the west yet due to various reasons (there are informations about this issue on his website "normalbreathing.com"). Although i did Yoga, Taiji and other arts that work on breathing for many years very intensely, i did not even come close to the concentration and energy level i have now. This is a result of the methods described in the book. Surely one of the books, that change lives for real! Thanks dear Dr. Rakhimov for sharing this.

Wow, this book is horribly written. It reads like someone's poorly written, unedited, research notes. Which is sad for so important a topic. The book is thoroughly researched, however, and Rakhimov's credentials are unimpeachable. It's work to get through it, but if you're struggling with respiration like I am, it's worth a look.

“Sleep is the best meditation.” – Dalai Lama

Whilst the above quote is probably true for regular, knowledgeable and experienced meditators, the majority of people who have sleep problems are unlikely to be meditators. Prior to reading this book my knowledge of sleep was highly influenced by my study of CBTi (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia). In CBTi the main techniques used to improve sleep are stimulus control, sleep hygiene. sleep restriction therapy, cognitive restructuring and reducing sleep interfering mental arousal. Dr. Rakhimov presents a very different perspective and approach to poor sleep and chronic insomnia. Whilst he mentions many of the important topics in books on CBTi, Dr. Rakhimov also includes many interesting topics that are not included in books on how to improve sleep. These include the main sleep factors that result in health problems and the medical evidence that relates to sleep and the effects of heavy breathing. The book describes various how-to-sleep methods that together have the goal of enabling people to sleep less but better. One of the main factors that cause health damage during sleep is mouth breathing. Dr. Rakhimov describes an extremely simple, very low cost, but very effective method to prevent nocturnal mouth breathing and benefit from the many health benefits of nasal breathing. These benefits include better oxygenation of the tissues and organs and more relaxed sleep. I would highly recommend this book not only to people who would like to have better quality sleep but also to physicians and psychologists who treat people with sleep problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical and with great information
Reviewed in Germany on November 28, 2013
I knew the author from his website (normalbreathing.com), this book is my first purchase of his work and I'm very satisfied.
The book is based in Buteyko's breathing retraining, and it has both information and exercises for sleeping healthier beyond average. I specially liked that it covers sleeping models up to just 2h of sleeping a day.

I actually don't have any problem with my sleeping, but I'm very interested in improving that area because I know that we shouldn't need 8h. I was very satisfied to find useful information about how to improve my sleeping, and I already set the goal, for the next year I won't have the need to sleep more than 4hrs.

I definitely recommend it!
