Muscle hypertrophy—defined as an increase in muscular size—is one of the primary outcomes of resistance training. Science and Development of Muscle Hypertrophy is a comprehensive compilation of science-based principles to help professionals develop muscle hypertrophy in athletes and clients. With more than 825 references and applied guidelines throughout, no other resource offers a comparable quantity of content solely focused on muscle hypertrophy. Readers will find up-to-date content so they fully understand the science of muscle hypertrophy and its application to designing training programs.

Written by Brad Schoenfeld, PhD, a leading authority on muscle hypertrophy, this text provides strength and conditioning professionals, personal trainers, sport scientists, researchers, and exercise science instructors with a definitive resource for information regarding muscle hypertrophy—the mechanism of its development, how the body structurally and hormonally changes when exposed to stress, ways to most effectively design training programs, and current nutrition guidelines for eliciting hypertrophic changes. The full-color book offers several features to make the content accessible to readers:

• Research Findings sidebars highlight the aspects of muscle hypertrophy currently being examined to encourage readers to re-evaluate their knowledge and ensure their training practices are up to date.

• Practical Applications sidebars outline how to apply the research conclusions for maximal hypertrophic development.

• Comprehensive subject and author indexes optimize the book’s utility as a reference tool.

• An image bank containing most of the art, photos, and tables from the text allows instructors and presenters to easily teach the material outlined in the book.

Although muscle hypertrophy can be attained through a range of training programs, this text allows readers to understand and apply the specific responses and mechanisms that promote optimal muscle hypertrophy in their athletes and clients. It explores how genetic background, age, sex, and other factors have been shown to mediate the hypertrophic response to exercise, affecting both the rate and the total gain in lean muscle mass. Sample programs in the text show how to design a three- or four-day-per-week undulating periodized program and a modified linear periodized program for maximizing muscular development.

Science and Development of Muscle Hypertrophy is an invaluable resource for strength and conditioning professionals seeking to maximize hypertrophic gains and those searching for the most comprehensive, authoritative, and current research in the field.

This book cites real scientific studies. Lots of them. Expect to learn more than you thought you wanted/needed to know about phosphorylation and metabolic pathways and gene expression etc. etc.

Key takeaways:
* A large portion of 'conventional wisdom' on hypertrophy is based on studies on animal models (i.e. rats), the elderly, or untrained individuals. Meta-analyses cited in this book show that already resistance-trained people respond *very* differently to exercise. If you've already been lifting for a while, expect to have long-held views challenged!
* More dose-response relationships than you would expect are threshold-based vs linear. Meaning: as long as you're getting *enough* of a given macronutrient, micronutrient (vitamin/mineral), or even exercise stimulus, more of that thing doesn't necessarily equate to more gains.
* You need to be getting an array of low-rep high-weight and moderate-rep moderate-weight resistance training stimulus to keep climbing. An understanding of periodization over the short, medium and long term is necessary to sustain gains, because as you approach your 'genetic potential' your body will make it harder and harder to pack on muscle.
* Apparently low intensity steady-state cardio is just…unequivocally counterproductive for gaining muscle.

I'm really glad I read this book and I'd recommend it for anyone who wants to take their programming and diet to the next level!

Clear and concise explanation of the science and methodology behind hypertrophy. Brad has further added multiple scientific studies at the end of every chapter along with a summary. It doesn't say "NO, don't do this," but instead goes on to show studies including conflicting ones for the readers to make their own judgement.

I've also had books where writers literally fill up the entire book with sample "programs." It's not the case with this book. It's basically chapter after chapter of knowledge that either reinforce what you've learnt and forgotten or keep you up to date with current scientific development with regard to muscle hypertrophy.

As a certified personal trainer who's also a physical education teacher, it's hard to find books that speak sense without going into big jargon. This is easy to understand though some further research on your part is required.

As a 54 year old male, I'm not as interested in hypertrophy as I am in maintaining and even improving strength but hoped to gain insight from a highly regarded author. This book reads like an intermediate to advanced textbook, especially on the chemical reactions in the muscles. It is also very practical in terms of understanding movements, loads, volume, frequency and rest and simultaneously supports and debunks decades of gym lore. Very good book. Would have given five stars but the first few chapters were difficult to get through. Need to approach it like a textbook, take notes and reread to fully process and get all the benefit. Not for the casual reader, in my opinion.

Are you into weightlifting or strength training? Do you want to gain muscle but don't know the best place to go? STOP - don't listen to the 'gym gurus,' ignore that instagram 'expert' and BUY. THIS. BOOK. Brad is a well-known researcher, author and speaker in the fitness industry and this book is a culmination of his many, many years of working in exercise science and fitness. This is a technical read but provides very detailed explanations of how muscles adapt to the imposed demands of strength training. As someone who does a lot of writing and blogging for the American Council on Exercise, Brad is one of my go-to resources for scientifically valid information and he should become one of yours too.

This is 1 of 2 books thats needed for Modern Day Muscle Building. VERY IMPORTANT: This is similar to a scientific textbook! Very Very Very technical. Some sentences have 4 different terms you wont understand but I highly recommend this book because unlike all the junk out there, its unbiased and gives every popular study on each aspect of muscle hypertrophy. It even says when their isnt enough evidence to do one thing over another or when to take something with a grain of salt. I HIGHLY recommend everyone buys this hardcopy and read it all the through twice. Once for general grasping and a second time to further comprehend.

This book is exceptional for its “user friendliness”. I’ve read more than a few on this topic but Brad has the gift to explain so you understand without having to read the same sentences 20 times. Highly recommend this book. Plus, attend some seminars he hosts! He’s the greatest.

This is an excellent book! I have a small library and several health and fitness books. I learned new information from this book. It is a little on the academic side, which I like because I am a bio-geek. Summarizes several studies. Probably the most informative book on muscle development that I have ever read. Looking forward to reading future books from Brad Schoenfeld.

Excellent book by one of the current leaders in strength development research. Parts of it are a bit too detailed and probably not germane to most. However, overwhelmingly this is an important book for any gym “bro” looking to not to be a gym “bro”.

J'ai une petite collection de livres sur le sujet et c'est le meilleur que j'ai pu trouver. L'anglais est scientifique donc se lit sans difficulté. L'argumentaire est scientifique mais se révèle pouvoir être mis en pratique immédiatement. Un must.
