Your Brain On Nature Paperback – April 1, 2014

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 181 ratings

Every tech-addict's guide to restoring health and balance in an increasingly IT-dependent world.

Scientific studies have shown that natural environments can have remarkable benefits for human health. Natural environments are more likely to promote positive emotions, and viewing and walking in nature have been associated with heightened physical and mental energy. Nature has also been found to have a positive impact on children who have been diagnosed with impulsivity, hyperactivity and attention-deficit disorder.

In Your Brain on Nature, physician Eva Selhub and naturopath Alan Logan examine not only the effects of nature on the brain, but the ubiquitous influence of everyday technology on the brain, and how IT overload and its many distractions may even be changing it. Offering an antidote for the technology-addicted, the book outlines emerging nature-based therapies including ecotherapy, as well as practical strategies for improving your (and your children's) cognitive functioning, mental health and physical well-being through ecotherapeutic, nutritional and behavioural means. A powerful wake-up call for our tech-immersed society, Your Brain on Nature examines the fascinating effects that exposure to nature can have on the brain.

This was an incredibly informative and useful book. Not only did the authors bring together a lot of research on exposure to nature (in various forms) as a healthful way to live, they organized the chapters carefully to build a strong argument for making the lifestyle changes that will allow each of us to live a better quality life. I originally borrowed the book from my library, but then purchased it so that I can share it with family and friends.

One of the best psychology books I have read in a long time. The study of psychology in my opinion is most valuable and interesting when we can accurately and meaningfully analyze how entities around us interact with the diverse systems of our minds to produce behavior. The authors take you through the full scale of how evolutionary development, contemporary environments, physiology, and other aspects of our beings and world interact with nature to in important ways influence the human being. It is explained scientifically, understandably, and smoothly. This is a must read for all humans and once you pick it up you won't feel like putting it down or sitting inside all day.

Thank you for writing this book.

Best,

Om

The religious, shamanic, or spiritual significance of entheogens is well established in anthropological and modern contexts; entheogens have traditionally been used to supplement many diverse practices geared towards achieving transcendence, including white and black magic, divination, meditation, yoga, sensory deprivation, asceticism, prayer, trance, rituals, chanting, hymns like peyote songs, and drumming. Having tried Your Brain on Nature, I feel that I must now go to rehab.

I love this important and thoroughly documented book. So many of our modern afflictions can be traced back to our disconnection from our natural environment in… nature! I already had the Kindle version of this book, and bought the paperback version as well, because I wanted to be able to hold it my hands and flip around, make notes, and use as a reference in a way that isn't as convenient with the electronic version. (Not to mention, the salubrious effect on my brain from reducing screen time! )

Your Brain on Nature was well written and had loads of cases and data on the role of nature in our health. However, the data were largely correlative - I.e. the results of correlating health outcomes with everything from potted plants to views of trees in a hospital room. I was looking for causation more than correlation which is why I was intrigued by the title that mentioned the brain. But there wasn't much on the brain, possibly because not enough is known yet. The data on health and nature were useful though and I look forward to seeing more on the agency of the correlations, the brain.

This is an excellent, well-thought out book that presents the science behind our need for nature without preaching or getting too technical. Though I am a life-long gardener, I still felt after reading this book that there are changes I should make in my own life -- change in my own diet and and make the time I spend in nature more purposeful. Everyone who lives in a city, works in an office, or spends significant time staring at a screen should read this book. It could be a life-changer for you.

The science backing up this book is great. Really enjoyed every part of it. We all need gentle reminders of facts we already know. It made me make changes in my life.
Got happy lights in the rooms at the spa since the room is always dark for our clients and ordered nature murals. Connected to the earth with my outdoor exercises. Ahh!
Kudos to Eva!
