Winner of the 2019 Christianity Today Book Award in the Christian Living & Discipleship Category

"This book is going to shake us all up in the most wonderfully destabilizing way.” ―Ray Ortlund, Lead Pastor, Immanuel Church, Nashville, Tennessee

What did God use to draw a radical, committed unbeliever to himself? Did God take her to an evangelistic rally? Or, since she had her doctorate in literature, did he use something in print? No, God used an invitation to dinner in a modest home, from a humble couple who lived out the gospel daily, simply, and authentically.

With this story of her conversion as a backdrop, Rosaria Butterfield invites us into her home to show us how God can use this same “radical, ordinary hospitality” to bring the gospel to our lost friends and neighbors. Such hospitality sees our homes as not our own, but as God’s tools for the furtherance of his kingdom as we welcome those who look, think, believe, and act differently from us into our everyday, sometimes messy lives―helping them see what true Christian faith really looks like.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Artfully woven into the fabric of who we are, each of us possesses an urgency to be included, an ache to be known, and a longing to be welcomed. In this book, Rosaria describes how the good news of the gospel not only meets our deepest needs but transforms us into cohosts who invite others to meet Jesus. Rosaria Butterfield’s enthusiasm for the unparalleled expression of hospitality―the Son of God on the cross drawing all men to himself―is what energizes her to practice radically ordinary hospitality and invite us all to do the same. This book will stir your imagination to generate creative ways to incorporate radically ordinary hospitality into your own life as well.”
Gloria Furman, author, Labor with Hope and Missional Motherhood

“God strongly advances his cause by raising up prophetic voices of fresh insight, bold words, and powerful impact. Rosaria Butterfield is just such a voice for God in our time. The Gospel Comes with a House Key is Rosaria’s heart reaching out to our hearts, calling us to love our neighbors with sacrificial hospitality. This book is going to shake us all up in the most wonderfully destabilizing way.”
Ray Ortlund, President, Renewal Ministries

“This book isn’t for those who want to live the comfortable Christian life. Rosaria proves there is no such thing. She has a unique way of blending personal story and theological teaching that challenges the reader to engage in areas of both agreement and disagreement. I was sharpened well in both cases.”
Aimee Byrd, author, Theological Fitness and No Little Women

“It’s easier than ever to live in communities with no real sense of community. Neighbors don’t know neighbors, and our lives are lived online rather than on the front porch. Rosaria Butterfield demonstrates how living a life of radically ordinary hospitality can allow strangers to become neighbors, and, by God’s power, those neighbors can become part of God’s family. I couldn’t put this book down―it’s compelling, challenging, and convicting.”
Melissa B. Kruger, author; Vice President of Discipleship Programming, The Gospel Coalition

“One cannot spend any time at all with Rosaria Butterfield without a renewed sense of how good the good news really is. This book is a needed call to the church to model the hospitality of our Lord. As our culture faces a crisis of loneliness, this is the book we need. The book will inspire you and leave you with a notebook filled with ideas for how to practically engage your neighbors with the welcome of the gospel.”
Russell Moore, Editor in Chief, Christianity Today

“The biblical call to show hospitality is one of the most overlooked or misunderstood commands in Scripture. We either ignore it or mistake it for what our culture calls ‘entertaining.’ Rosaria Butterfield gives us a vision of hospitality that pulses with the beating heart of the gospel itself. We know a God who sought us out, took us in, made us family, and seated us at his table. It’s a vision that is bracing and attractive. It daunts us, but it shouldn’t. I wonder how different our homes, churches, and culture would look if we took it to heart.”
Sam Allberry, Associate Pastor, Immanuel Nashville; author; speaker

“One of the hallmarks of the people of God is supposed to be hospitality. But in an age of commuter churches, towns disemboweled by shopping malls, and lives that are overscheduled and full of ceaseless activity, hospitality is something which, like true friendship, is at a premium. In this book, Rosaria Butterfield makes a bold case for putting hospitality back into the essential rhythm of the church’s daily life. She sets the bar very high―and there is plenty of room here for disagreement on some of the proposals and details―but the basic case, that church is to be a community marked by hospitality, is powerfully presented and persuasively argued.”
Carl R. Trueman, Professor of Biblical and Religious Studies, Grove City College; author, The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self

Rosaria Butterfield was once a tenured professor of English who identified as a lesbian and worked to advance the cause of LGBT equality. After her conversion to Christ in 1999, she came to see the sinfulness of having any identity apart from Him.

Rosaria is married to Kent Butterfield, pastor of the First Reformed Presbyterian Church of Durham, and is a home-school mother, pastor's wife, author, and speaker. She is helping Christians to better understand their LGBT neighbors and loved ones so that we can lovingly look past labels of sexual identity and share the gospel effectively.

A Redeemed Life
There's a lot of challenge in how Rasario and her husband live their lives. What comes to mind having watched several of her video's is that she is living a more radical lifestyle now than she did as a lesbian-feminist-literary professor-academic and its this redemption of her skillsets as well as her soul that is awesome. As a Christian man I understand women, particularly once leftist women, don't always get as much the gentile Jesus is the same as the thundering God of holiness on Mt. Zion.Calling the county jail where the meth-addict Hank was taken a hell-hole and the guard thoughtless and uncaring because of a suicide in the jail Aimee the near dead fellow addict was incarcerated betrays a perspective problem.Sometimes compassion is severe and that burden is carried by prison guards, police department , soldiers and a thousands of men and women who carry the heavy but oh so necessary sword of justice to make the world safe for Rosario and her family.

I am not finished with this book but the authors viewpoint is insightful and thought provoking. I don’t believe that my beliefs and point of views are 100% aligned with the author and that’s okay. The book is tasteful and the authors story gives credibility to her writings. It has definitely provoked thoughts in me about the Christian and neighbor that I want to be! I am a very introverted person- socializing with my neighbors freaks me out. This book calls me out and I’m okay with that.

The author does an excellent job making a case for how important and underrated hospitality is to a hurting world. She captures my attention instantly with her story about her neighbor Hank. She leaves me hanging through a couple of chapters before I get more details about his story.

I almost put down the book permanently when she gets on her high religious horse. I suspect she and I would disagree about some of our theology. And I didn't need to be persuaded, so those chapters weren't written for me. If you skim (or skip) that beginning section, it's well worth the practical ideas for how to open up your own home and life in hospitality.

A great challenge that I shall take up. May all our neighbors become friends and our friends become family.

If you can get past how many times the author says “radically ordinary hospitality,” then this book is life-changing! Challenging and inspiring.

It did come quickly, but the first couple pages were dog eared. Otherwise I straightened them out and good as new!
Only through the 1st 2 chapters. This is a hard book to put down. Very good!

This is a very well written and challenging book! Important call and challenge to all who claim the name of Christ.

Very impactful book by someone who was dead set against Christianity but was won over by hospitality. A must read for those tired of the same-old-same-old of traditional churches.
Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2023
I didn’t know what opening my home up to would look like or if my neighbors even cared to come.

Now after having them over a few times I love marking on our calendar days to fellowship with our neighbors. Though we are not at the point of being an open door where our neighbors feel free to come at any time, my hope is that in time we will be.

This is a great read with some really important ideas to ponder.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book on evangelism I have ever read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 16, 2018
Too often writing and teaching on evangelism is complicated or reductionist. Often there is a heavy focus on apologetics and it can all seem quite daunting. This book is simple yet profound. Be salt and light amongst your neighbours - whoever they are, whatever their background, whatever their beliefs. Love them for who they are, with the knowledge there is a loving God who longs to know them and change them. Be a safe person, provide a safe environment for people to be themselves, for them to share their secrets and longings and hurts.

Every Christian can do this. You don't need to have done a course of apologetics, have a masters in Theology or know everything about other religions or worldviews. Every Christian has the love of God as part of their DNA and they can open their lives and homes and share that with those around them. Rosaria Butterfield shows us how this can be done and the wonderful, world changing impact that can have.

Thankyou for writing this book and I pray that this gets into the hands of as many Christians as possible.
