In Awakening the Luminous Mind, meditation teacher Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche guides you to find refuge within instead of searching for support outside of yourself. Using the heart instructions of Dawa Gyaltsen, an 8th-century Tibetan meditation master, as a vehicle to guide contemplative practice, Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche opens your eyes to the gifts hidden in your ordinary experiences.

The meditations presented in the book and on the accompanying audio download provide a direct way to meet the challenges of life as we encounter them. Fully incorporating these practices into daily life will help you open and transform your perceived limitations into unlimited possibilities. They will help you dissolve self-doubt and self-judgment, and discover the wisdom and light inherent within you in every moment.

Awakening the Luminous Mind completes a series of three books that present meditation instructions and practices to help readers discover the treasury of the natural mind.

In my experience Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche is the best of the Tibetan Buddhist masters teaching in English. He has a wonderful ability to give us the essence of the Dzogchen direct method without a lot of jargon and complicated language and philisophical abstraction - something that I probably won't be able to altogether avoid in this review, but I'll do my best. The techniques presented in this book, as in all his works, are simple and direct. As I understand it the method is as follows: find the stillness within the body, the silence in speech, and the spaciousness within the Heart-Mind, and you can abide in the Bliss of natural essence, that which we always are both beyond and within all manifest phenomena. Rinpoche takes us through 5 meditations that help us experience that 1. Our perception of phenomena is a function of our own mental conditioning and has no inherent reality (Vision is Mind) 2. Our mental-emotional constructs are formed from and of Mind, which is essentially beyond all conditioning (Empty), no matter what form it assumes (Mind is Empty) 3. The emptiness or "qualitylessness" of Mind is imbuded with and pervaded by a Luminous Awareness or Presence that is Consciousness itself (Emptiness is Clear Light) 4. This Awareness/Consciousness/Presence is one with and not separate from the unconditioned ground of being from which all manifestation arises (Clear Light is Union) 5. The inherent quality of this union of Clear Light and Emptiness, and our experience when we abide in this Union, is Great Bliss (Union is Great Bliss). Our access to this Great Bliss is simply through the portal of stillness/silence/spaciousness that can be found in all experience. The book is accompanied by a CD of guided meditations, available as MP3 downloads for the Kindle Version. If you can achieve the realizations taught in this book then Peace and Joy are yours. Suffice it to say this is a great book!

This book and its teaching is fantastic. I have experience in this kind of meditation, but this book teaches a very quick and effective way to get to a deep meditation state. My main issue is that the kindle doesn't include the crucial guided meditations. You might get them with the audiobook. I had access to them through a course I am taking but I would have not benefited as much if I had only the kindle book

This is easily one of the best dharma books I have ever read. It's incredibly simple and direct, to the point. Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche has an amazing way of knowing exactly where you objections will be, how your mind will wrestle with the material, how you might feel that he is over simplifying matters or how your ego might trick itself. Then, with the finesse that few other masters have, he dismantles all your fears and cuts to the root of the issue. This is a one stop practice guide for me that I constantly refer to when I get lost in my path and need some simple words that will remind me of the view. This profound simplicity of this book inspired me to purchase almost everything he's ever written, which is written with a similar lucidity. The steps in this book can be followed by anyone, yet they will have a tremendous impact on your life. I can't recommend this book enough, it might be all you ever need to have a completely fruitful spiritual practice.

I really like this book.

My main take away is that it is worthwhile to investigate and explore lucid dreaming, not because of cool experiences, but because by learning to bring enough ordinary consciousness to the sleep state and wake up in the dream, that you can then better learn how to awake in the dream state we call "awake".

Of course, the author believes that our normal waking state is fundamentally the same as our dream state, except that our sensory perception when awake are more orderly and cohesive that the random sensory burps and hiccups of the sleep state.

I also find it helpful to experiment with lucid dreaming and the non-physical nature of that state. For example, you don't have to figure out how to move your legs to get somewhere in a dream state; all you need to do it wish to be someplace and you are. Or, if you think "gee, it would be nice to have a hammer right now" and then you have one. Very cool, and somehow liberating fom the material world we, as embodied consciousnesses, inhabit.

It's hard for ego to accept how simple deep practice can be. Ego doesn't thrive off of simplicity, but wants more and more complicated practices and theories to keep itself busy.

The teachings in here are direct and profound and work. You can save yourself a lot of time and unnecessary effort by engaging this book and the guided meditations on the CD wholeheartedly.

Maintain naked awareness of infinite space at all times. Recognize & appreciate the warmth/bliss that spontaneously and effortlessly arises from this awareness of space/openness. Refresh your commitment to this practice daily and gradually develop an indestructible confidence and trust in the changeless qualities that constitute your Being.

The last paragraph is too complicated the practice is simpler than that. Once you get to know intimately each word in 'Clear Light' just let that be your mantra and all falls into place naturally without effort.

This is the best book on dzogchen practice available in my opinion (although obviously I haven't read them all). It keeps practice informal, i.e. to be carried out in daily life. The simplicity is wonderful. You will be introduced to the Inner Refuge, and the 3 Doors through which it is accessed. You will use the experience of stillness, silence and spaciousness, to help you come to terms with your physical and mental problems. This book gives one a feeling of optimism; that there is some 'good news' that things don't have to be the way they are. I heartily recommend this wise book to all people looking for peace in their life.
