Sustainability Principles and Practice 2nd Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 210 ratings

There is a newer edition of this item:

This new and expanded edition builds upon the first edition’s accessible and comprehensive overview of the interdisciplinary field of sustainability. The focus is on furnishing solutions and equipping the student with both conceptual understanding and technical skills for the workplace.

Each chapter explores one aspect of the field, first introducing concepts and presenting issues, then supplying tools for working toward solutions. Techniques for management and measurement as well as case studies from around the world are provided. The second edition includes a complete update of the text, with increased coverage of major topics including the Anthropocene; complexity; resilience; environmental ethics; governance; the IPCC’s latest findings on climate change; Sustainable Development Goals; and new thinking on native species and novel ecosystems.

Chapters include further reading and discussion questions. The book is supported by a companion website with links, detailed reading lists, glossary, and additional case studies, together with projects, research problems, and group activities, all of which focus on real-world problem solving of sustainability issues.

The textbook is designed to be used by undergraduate college and university students in sustainability degree programs and other programs in which sustainability is taught.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Achieving sustainability is the single most important challenge facing humanity, and yet few people realize it. If every student read this text the chances of civilization averting a collapse would be substantially improved.

Paul Ehrlich, Stanford University, USA

This book provides much needed and relevant information on the theory and practice of sustainability. It is comprehensive and useful with practical applications in a wide range of human endeavors.

Stephen R. Kellert, Yale University, USA

Everyone thinks they know what sustainability is, but few people truly understand it--and fewer still can explain it well. Robertson cuts through the greenwash and the clichés with a top-notch exploration of the topic in all its complexities. It's an enjoyable read that's both thoroughly grounded in science and steeped in wonder at our fascinating, fragile planet.

Daniel Lerch, Post Carbon Institute, USA

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the state of our earth systems and what we can do to positively impact change. The book can be used for both undergraduate and graduate education, and across a variety of disciplines. I learned something new at every turn of the page.

Kevin Dooley, Arizona State University, USA

Margaret Robertson has produced the closest thing yet to a comprehensive textbook on what is a crucial subject. The book provides a grounding in the key challenges while also communicating the potential solutions in a clear and positive fashion. It is equipped to become an essential go-to text for both students of sustainability and those working in the field.

James Evans, University of Manchester, UK

Odds are, you didn't choose to buy this book, but you need it for a course. This book discusses the three pillars of sustainability: Society, Environment, and Economics. The book does raise awareness of sustainability, so it gets a checkmark for the society portion. Environment: It is printed on recyclable paper, but also paper is a dead tree's skin that costs money compared to electronic copies. No checkmark here. Economics: This book did cost a good bit of money, no checkmark here. Buy it for the class, enjoy it for the irony.

Brand new. Great condition. However, it was completely opened when I received it. Looked like someone just ripped it open and stuff it in the mail box.

This book was the textbook my professor used for the foundations of sustainability class in my fashion studies program. It is a great book for people who wants to learn the basics. Great explanations and covers a lot of information. Highly recommends it.

I used this text for by undergrad business course on "Innovation for Sustainability."
It provides great up-to-date descriptions of the key concepts and findings of sustainability issues, in straightforward and well-researched prose.
I only taught 11 of the chapters, those that thought were more relevant for my business students. My students and I learned a lot from the book.
There were a couple of minor typos in the text/images, but overall this is a valuable and high-quality text.

This book is really good and the first part of it sheds light on today issues and things we need to do to better our planet. How ever as an AG student, I cannot condone not eating meat. Majority of America is module land and is made for grazing. Meaning not a crop growing environment.

Bought for a college class. Provided very useful and important information but wasn't the most exciting read. More information based which isn't a bad thing if thats what you're going for.

This book was for a class I took at University. The book was necessary reading. Although I do not agree with anthropogenic climate change, I appreciated the ease of reading (especially since it was required). This book goes into detail about sustainable ideas and practices that are in use and could be implemented.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Overview
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 4, 2015
This book truly gives a comprehensive overview of sustainability issues. It begins with a couple of chapters which explain the earth as a system and what contributes to its long-term sustainability as a system. The remainder of the book is a survey of the various issues surrounding human interaction with the environment - waste, energy, products, cities, ecosystems, water etc etc. Each chapter outlines the major problems related to a the issue in question and the solutions currently being tried or experimented with. The explanations are clear and succinct and the writing is therefore generally very easy to understand, even for the non-expert. I bought the book as preparatory reading to teach a grade 10 on sustainability and could not have made a better choice. I found the book highly informative and an enjoyable read.
