Many colleges, both two-year and four-year, are now requiring students to take a class during their first semester to learn about emotional intelligence, study skills, time management, and more. These colleges do show significant improvement in success and retention (students not dropping out during the semester and returning the next semester).
This book would be an excellent textbook for such classes. It has a good introduction to what EI (emotional intelligence) is, then one chapter for each of the sixteen elements of EI. Each of these chapters begins with a definition from Multi-Health Symptoms of the element of EI discussed in that chapter; thorough, down-to-earth examples that students can understand; and then how to improve one’s self in that element of EI. The authors stress the point that though IQ can rarely change, people can change their EI.
I can highly recommend this book to any and all college students and college-bound high school students. The authors are very knowledgeable in psychology and psychiatry, but they have produced a very readable text for this age group that can help them succeed in college and the working world.
Who I am: I’m an instructor of English at a two-year college.
Why I chose this book: Our college is emphasizing EI in a program called LEAP, and I wanted to read more about EI.
In this book, Rational Emotional Behavior Therapy (REBT)'s ABCDE methodology is prescribed-- the authors advocate that by rationally and diligently changing belief (B of ABCDE), it is possible to change consequences (C). Rational Emotional Behavior Therapy (REBT) is a school of psychotherapy. ABCDE means (Perceived) Action, (Related) Belief, (Emotional) Consequences, (Rational) Dispute of Belief, and (Changed) Effects. Authors are most interested in changing at the "B" (Belief) stage.
As ABCDE is so logical, then why didn't people think of this before? Well, they did. ABCDE is actually a disguised, simplistic, traditional "Thou Shalt" advice method. To see this, I'll add < > below.
Each chapter has title of a virtue -- impulse control, assertive, independent, aware, flexible, socially responsible, etc., and the authors describe excellently the problems of lacking these virtues--the vices . For example, the chapter on Impulse Control starts with describing a successful businessman who claims his impulsiveness helped his career with snap decisions, intuition calls, aggressive assertiveness.... Authors counter-claim that the businessman's impulsiveness <vice> was damaging to those around him, caused many personal failures, and "just imagine how much more he (the businessman) might achieve in both his working and personal relationships, if he were able to operate less impulsively <virtue>...." "(Authors) are not suggesting that effective impulse control <virtue> involves stifling or disregarding valuable gut feeling. Rather it is the capacity to Look Before You Leap--to manage a wide range of volatile emotional states and urges <vices> wisely and coolly."
The authors' ABCDE prescription is -- businessman <Thou Shalt evaluate your B (Belief) before taking any impulsive action. Look Before You Leap.> It's not that the businessman doesn't know this historical advice "Look Before Leap." Instead, his intuition, instinct, and overall emotional state DRIVES him to be impulsive. And these thoughts, feelings, and compulsions completely overwhelm his ABCDEs. (Human are creatures of emotions, not reason--and there are reasons why). Compulsions, addictions, chronic behavior patterns, loves and fears, anger-- these tend to interfere with acquiring desired "rational" skills, and one can learn all about the "rational" methods, without being able to change these emotional patterns.
The authors suggest the businessman can self-reflect (or go into therapy) to learn his ABCDEs for impulse control. But, ultimately, this ABCDEs will lead to his having to learn his ABCDEs for the entire range of "Thou Shalt" chapter title advices in this book: Thou Shalt be emotional aware, Thou Shalt have high self-regard, Thou Shalt be assertive, ... Thou Shalt be emotionally expressive, ..... all probably twenty New personality traits. Regardless of how much time the businessman spends to rid a vice, another vice seems to then appear. Very, very difficult to achieve--ridding all vices, and takes time away from his innate competitive advantages. Maybe the ABCDEs aren't the correct prescription?
The authors' spends a lot of time writing that if one's virtues (the chapter titles) aren't right, then extensive problems result from ensuing vices. But simplistic ABCDE prescriptive answers, which are really disguised "Thou Shalts", historically hasn't worked that well. Eastern and western religions offer superior answers. The book simply doesn't dig deep enough as to why people act with such vices, and is dispensing simplistic advices that is mediocre, though these "Thou Shalt" advice will work for some people.
If a reader believes in REBT and ABCDE, this is a good book, not a great one because its examples given are weak (a 4 star). If one doesn't believe in REBT and ABCDE, skim this book anyhow for some advice (a 2 star).
