From the first night when they encounter a screaming girl and discover cockroaches in the kitchen, these nurses' know they are in for challenging days ahead!

London, 1980. Draughty windows, radiators that won't switch off, food that goes missing in the night and constant noise when trying to sleep in tiny rooms. Will these nurses' from all over the United Kingdom manage the stresses and strains of learning and shift work in a specialist hospital?

This sequel to Hurry up Nurse: memoirs of nurse training in the 1970s, follows our young nurse to London. Here she moves into a nurses' home and takes up further training at a hospital in the heart of the capital’s East End.

Hurry up Nurse 2 is another charming nursing biography that includes humour and compassion. There's a lot of nursing and medical history to pack in as the experiences are set in a hospital specialising in heart and chest surgery. Cancer chemotherapy is in its infancy, but open heart surgery is fast becoming routine. Tuberculosis is an ever present danger, so there’s a lot to learn and a lot to avoid. Added to all of this is the enquiring mind of a young nurse who, having been told to avoid the hospital God squad does the exact opposite.

You will meet some lovable characters in this account. The charming Mr Robinson sees potential in a party-loving young nurse. The energetic Mrs Chang keeps the trainees on their toes. The young nurses still growing up find it a challenge to live in a rundown nurses’ home. A night porter who enjoys a midnight chat, and of course the patients’ who touch all of their lives.

If you liked the first book in this series, you will love this one.

Review

I would recommend this book to any reader interested in the development of health care

An excellent read after the first book, I can't fault it on any way, just wish there were more.

Very witty account of nursing in London in the eighties which appealed to me as I trained and lived at a London hospital.

Love this book gave a flavour of nursing in a time when I was nursing, I hope this isn't the last in the series.

Ms. Brookes may as well have written this book just for me and I thank her for this. I trained for my SRN (as it was) in a large London Hospital in a Jan. 1970 set. A few years before Ms. Brookes but the environment was exactly the same except our uniforms were much more antiquated. I left England a few months after qualifying and I must say nursing in another country was not at all the same. I soon lost track of all my friends from my set so many of my memories have laid buried for decades. Thanks to this book I have been able to remember a lot about the good, the bad and the ugly of student nursing days. Pictures, atmospheres, sounds and, unfortunately, smells (especially carbolic soap) have been resurrected as I read this book. This makes me wish I had kept a diary from those days.
I've bought the next book now and am off to start it.

HURRY UP NURSE 2
Perhaps the author didn’t realize her reminisces, funny and sad, could have an unintended impact. ‘Hurry Up Nurse 2’ details a specialized course Dawn took at London’s Chest Hospital after she got her State Enrolled Nurse Certificate. It was while she was working here she gave up smoking and I’m sure many readers would be inspired to do the same. The patient stories are, as in Hurry Up Nurse, both inspiring, funny and sad. The patients’ chest diseases, many of them fatal, are described in a stark but very compassionate manner. It’s a good education for people who smoke or who has a loved one who smokes.
Dawn herself is living in London for the first time, and enjoying all the big City has to offer. She lives in the Nurses Home, and as I lived in a few also, I was reminded strongly of how the doors in the hallway banged one after another when other nurses are on duty early and you are not and trying to sleep through that and the inevitable old gurgling pipes! There's a lot of camaraderie among young, single nurses and this is no different. Stories from outside work are amusing also, especially when she finds herself at a party for business people and tries to pass herself off as one in order to meld with the group.
I enjoyed the first in the series better, but this is definitely worth a read, and I am looking forward to the 'delivery' of ‘Hurry Up Midwife’.

I always love books which highlight a true to life experience. I grew up around the same time as the author and many of her experiences seem to mirror those that I had in an altogether different field. I guess it was the era. You could feel her trepidation as she made the trek to London. I'm from the U.S., so it was interesting to read about her experiences in the U.K. I have sister-in-law who were nurse during this same period, and they tell some of the same experiences from a U.S. perspective. The authors sense of humor shines through in the telling of her memoir. The style of this books makes for a very enjoyable read. Makes me wish I had kept a journal when I started my career.

Boring. As a nurse in the 70's I feel the author could have written more on hospital life rather than her own drawn out family life/social life. I am writing about the same period in nursing and have stuck to the sad, happy, exciting, astounding things which went on during my training, not who I shared a flat with!

I was a new nurse here in the US when Dawn Brookes book, Hurry up Nurse, 2, takes place. I know full well the trials and tribulations of being a nurse entering upon their chosen career path, as a newbee. I laughed and cried throughout this book as it resonated so closely to my practice as an advanced nurse in labor and delivery. Dr's and staff and those in charge were similar to my experiences. Thanks, Dawn fir another really good look back to life as a nurse.

I enjoyed this look into a nurses's experience in 1980 London. As an American, it was interesting to read about nurse training in a different country and era, and I got a kick out of the chapters Sputnum, Cabbages, and Smelly Shoes. Overall a good memoir that was worth my time.

Hurry Up Nurse 2 was a well written and charming little walk down memory lane. Not for me - I was never a nurse. For the author. Ms. Brookes gave some funny insight into what nursing training was like in the 1970 ' and 1980's. My sister, now a retired nurse, was trained in the late 1960's and early 1970's so in a way, I can relate. I would recommend this book to anyone who just wants to relax, and enjoy a good read.

This is such a wonderful story. The flow is so smooth that it actually seems to read itself. You identify with the main characters readily and she has been presented genuinely. As we follow the nurse's journey we understand her motivations and her passion for the role. Don't expect stormy words, suspense or startling endings. This is an easy read which I enjoyed very much.

I hope Dawn plans to continue the series and relate her adventures during her SRN training. If she doesn’t, I’ll be disappointed. What about it Dawn, have you more memoirs to share with us?

4.0 out of 5 stars The girl done well

Enjoyable read and shows what a girl can do when she puts her mind to it. Bit strange reading about older fashioned treatments but could still relate to them. I’d love to read more about her RGN and midwifery training.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is not boring to read and very interesting.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 2, 2021
I did not dislike anything about the book. The author did well to explain certain procedures to her readers and used humour at times in what is otherwise a very difficult profession.
The main thing was that she made it interesting and kept the reader wanting to pick the book up again to read. Well done, Dawn Brookes, you wrote excellent accounts of your time as a nurse.
