Thank you Derrick for being the dad, uncle, brother I never had. Your raw honesty of your learning curves and life lessons made your book all the more authentic. This past August I ended my engagement two months before our wedding date with “no contact” in place — due to narcissistic abuse started and escalated once the engagement ring was on my finger. I absolutely LOVE this book. Derrick is great with words, saying things in a way that's straight forward and to the point. His analogies help give perspective that you may not have seen before. I appreciate his attention and guidance to focusing on yourself first, then your (future) partner. He highlights the importance of emotional intelligence, understanding your own emotions, triggers and reactions that may be causing you to get in your own way of being happy. To truly listen to your partner, tuning out the outside world (and society's version of what we are supposed to be/want/do) and seeing what it is your partner needs. Not subconsciously tolerating BS because it isn't really the person you want in front of you, it's to stop the stigma and spotlight of singleness and to quiet the loneliness. I wish more people today held the same values, opinions, morals and respect.

In this book alone, I could relate to every chapter, reflecting on past advice, seeing where and why relationships didn't work out, both on their side and mine, as well as where some of my fears that make me hesitant to date and start over again. I took the time to note important points he made and journal my own version/experiences, how I felt, my part, where I've ignored my intuition in fear of being "crazy" or simply wanting to give someone the benefit of the doubt with friends, family and significant others. It was eye opening.

I recommend everyone, at any stage in their lives, to read this book. Even if you already have a great relationship, it's a fantastic reminder to continue nurturing yourself and your relationship.

I really enjoyed this book. I'm just shy of a year being single after a 3 year emotionally- turned physically abused relationship. I fought to protect my boundaries. I've done so many things over these 11 months (gone on my first cruise, enjoyed concerts with my friends, switched up my style of dress and I even cut and colored my hair). I have experienced a very deep and painful heartbreak from a relationship which I am trying to put in the past, but I’m not having much success. I sincerely loved the person. I spent more years in the relationship than most people stay married. Please pray for me and that God will allow my heart to mend; and I can really moved forward, and feel the joys of life once again. I read this book within the 3 weeks after my divorce, I was on the receiving end of infidelity and witnessed full effects upon her of both lack of self-love and how all of that can be exacerbated by alcoholism. She had purchased this book a year ago during another rough patch that was also fed by depression and drinking. I gave it back to her to re-read and see if it can offer her another perspective after her infidelity.
It provided information and insight to the perspective of the parties within relationships. I will be re-reading once the coping/healing period has passed and my mindset is different to see what other information I can take from it. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who would like to peer into the potential troubles of relationships and for ideas that should be used to strengthen current or future endeavors. I passed the name of the book to a co-worker today and recommended to him that he, and his soon to be wife, read it, I would be very curious as to what lessons he would take from the book as a man who went through a similar situation to mine a couple years ago and is currently happily engaged to the woman he loves and respects, yet still retains some very hard feelings towards his ex. Maybe some of the mechanisms discussed in the book can help him to move beyond the hurt so he can be the man he will need to be in this relationship. Only gave this 4-stars due to the fact that some of my own experience and training in psychology and sociology would tend to disagree on some of the recommendations or admissions that he makes to the reader. Overall though, take everything you can from this book because it does have much to offer.

Because Derrick went through the process of working on himself (learning what he needs vs. what his ego wants and how to love a woman correctly) with being successful in the end, he knows what behaviors and ways of thinking can make or break it. Him sharing his experience can help many who still don’t understand, why things don’t work out for them the way they hope or even how their own behavior contributes to their tries at relationships to fail over and over again.

First of all, listening to some of his video posts was interesting to me because some of the topics he talked about kind of resonated with me and my current emotional state.
