I have read all of Shawn Smith's books and gained valuable insight from each one. However, I really wanted my 19-year-old daughter to read this one. I have been married 20 years to a great man who is definitely "worth it" but I want her to actually understand and see what makes a good man for the long haul. I don't want to see her make the same relationship mistakes so many women make. I want her to become aware of the qualities that make men truly good boyfriends and husbands, and this book does precisely that. The author isn’t apologetic about men or male behavior. Just like his other book, “The Woman’s Guide to How Men Think,” this one celebrates the differences between men and women, and I appreciate that in a time when the lines of gender are becoming blurry. Even more important, IMHO, the book acknowledges that some men, more than others, have traits and characteristics that are better suited to long-term relationships. I have heard lots of mothers express the "get out there and experiment" attitude to their daughters which honestly freaks me out! Why not be selective and wise instead of only learning through random trial and error?!

Anyway, I love “the three pillars of a good man” (sense of purpose, good mental health, and emotional maturity) because it’s such a simple but powerful framework for thinking about what will work in a relationship years down the road. The “12-point man inspection” is also a useful tool, and great conversation starter between men and women. The writing is lighthearted but well researched and organized. I highly recommended this book for any woman who wants to know how great relationships work and what truly good men bring to the table. My daughter loved it and has said that the insight she gained is sticking with her

As a psychologist, I often see female patients struggle with whether a man treats them well and might be a good fit for them. This book helps on both counts, and I plan to recommend it to some of them.

I appreciated how the book starts by helping the reader identify how her history with male role models and other men affects her choices. This is critical. The book then focuses on three traits men possess when they are well-equipped for relationships: a sense of purpose, good mental health, and emotional maturity. The author gives detailed techniques for assessing these traits and understanding the behaviors associated with each.
Dr. Smith handles these topics with sensitivity and lightness, while at the same time being very direct about the factors women should consider before committing themselves to a serious relationship.

It's also important to point out that this book focuses on good and healthy relationships, not just broken ones, a welcome respite from the myriads of books out there. While the author gives plentiful examples of bad relationship behavior, the focus remains on what works. Women who use this book to examine their relationships may very well discover that they have wonderful boyfriends or husbands. Others may discover that they could do much better.

As a psychologist, I will recommend "Is He Worth It?" to any client seeking to create better relationships with men.

This is a good book that has great advice about how men work. I will make sure that my daughter reads this when she is older. This book will also help me guide myself so that I can be a better role model for my daughter and son.

I recently read this book as part of my neighborhood book club. It is beautifully written with sound advice for the single gal, and has plenty of anecdotal stories to keep the non-fiction psychology jargon fresh and interesting. There were six of us at our book club meeting, and while four of us are married, we found ourselves gleefully reminiscing on past relationships and the mistakes of our younger selves. We showered our two single book-club friends with plenty of (unsolicited) advice and found ourselves using the book to anchor our reasoning. We not only delighted in perseverating on ourselves and former partners, but gossiped about what made our current and past partners "worth it" ...or not.

Truthfully, we discovered that much of the advice in this book can be applied to many different kinds of relationships! As a group, we decided 4 out of 5 stars would be perfect - it incites plenty of self-reflection and is a great topic of conversation, though loses a tiny bit of relevance for those of us already in good relationships. Overall, a very informative and engaging read - A true MUST-read for singles looking for a good partner!

I randomly stumbled across Shawn's blog and ended up clicking a link to this book. It's a fast, easy read, with succinct and clear ideas about 'good men.' I think the points are reasonable, the author is not suggesting 'perfection' is necessary for a good future, but he is very clear about what the potential future looks like if you decide to make exceptions to some of the characteristics he describes. I have three daughters with whom I plan to review this material with in the future, and it left me wishing I had read this prior to my first (and failed) marriage. When it comes to written material, I often am a skeptic and critic... I literally have nothing to say - it is well written, well organized, and the content is practical, comprehensive and relevant. Well done and thank you!

This is a great book to remind women that men have a core need for relationship and often express it differently from us.

Especially helpful is Shawns list of what goes into a strong, healthy man's set of tools. When women are looking for a good man, putting the idea away that all men are hopeless at relationships and embracing the idea that many men want relationship with a good woman can give women a better shot at finding Mr Right.

One of the best books I've read on male/female psychology in the context of dating and relationships. I found it outstanding for my personal needs and as a women's dating coach too. Read the one written for men about women as well. Just as great!
