Keeping the Peace: Just the title alone is enough to make me feel at ease. And as the founder of Villalobos Rescue Center, living with multiple dogs is a given. Her words of wisdom and experience are truly soothing for those with a challenging pack. Nicole's detailed and step by step methods of managing a multi-dog household is a lifesaver. --Tia Maria Torres, Founder Villalobos Rescue Center, star of Pit Bulls and Parolees

Keeping the Peace: A Guide to Solving Dog-Dog Aggression in the Home is a nonfiction animal behavior book written by Nicole Wilde. Wilde is a certified professional dog trainer and the author of a number of books on canine behavior and training. She has also worked with fearful dogs, wolf-dog hybrids and wolves as part of her ongoing work with the Villalobos Rescue Center. Sometimes perfectly nice and loving dogs do not get on at all well with each other. It could be competition over food, toys or me-time with a favorite human. The fights can seem to spring up over nothing and with no warning. Wilde shows, however, how often those dogs give out signs that something is wrong beforehand, and she helps to translate body language, stern glances and other cues that can help caregivers recognize when trouble is brewing and possibly avert or minimize it. She analyzes key situations that can lead to aggressive behavior and gives training tips on how to reestablish harmony in a multi-dog house. I am a firm believer in having two canine companions, and while my two girls are the best of friends, I was pleased to discover Nicole Wilde s book. As I read through it, I could recognize behaviors both of my dogs indulge in, and was struck, once again, by how patient and kind my older dog has been towards the now nearly adult puppy she mothered and raised from four months. Sophie endures food theft, treat snatching, and then there s the wriggling body that insinuates itself between Sophie and me during cuddle time. There s only been one momentary conflict which left the two of them confused and noticeably upset afterwards. They have since been best of friends. Wilde s book was, therefore, for me, an opportunity to learn more about my own dogs, their behavior and how to make sure that Stevie does not push Sophie too far. Wilde s analyses of canine behavior are inspired and the accompanying photographs help to hammer home the concepts covered. I particularly value her training tips and recommendations on nutrition. Her use of positive training and insights into canine responses seem uncanny at times -- and that s a good thing. Anyone who has a dog or dogs in their lives would do well reading this book as Wilde shares so much of her knowledge of canine behavior. And while your dogs may not be fighters, it s good to know what to do to keep it that way or what to do if there s ever a scuffle. Keeping the Peace: A Guide to Solving Dog-Dog Aggression in the Home is most highly recommended. --Readers' Favorite Book Reviews

In her new book, canine behavior specialist and prolific author Nicole Wilde focuses on the challenges of and around multi-dog living. Even those who live with only one dog will find the author s coverage of a comprehensive training program to be of interest. The book is arranged in six parts. The first shows how to keep a very useful behavior diary (to facilitate learning more about canine body language). We then move to setting up a foundational program to help manage triggers, and strategies for success. Part three looks at useful behaviors that can help us recognize and create the optimum level of control, and in the next section, we learn techniques and protocols for handling specific problems such as resource guarding and how to safely walk dogs together. The fifth section covers useful interventions, including natural remedies and pharmacological options. Finally, because sometimes intra-dog problems require outside expert intervention, the author concludes with a resource guide to help us with the next steps. In summary, this book provides us with the tools we need to be better observers of our dog and to develop successful behavior protocols. --The BARK Magazine

Hope for my dogs to live together without the stress of separating to prevent injury!
I have 3 dogs: a female pit bull/Catahoula mix, male bull terrier, and we just rescued a boxer mix. I was initially concerned my female would struggle with our new addition. We did a neutral introduction and followed everything we knew to do to create harmony. Our bull terrier has a difficult past and several amazing people worked to get him to us to save him. He is a stage 5 clinger with limited manners, but has come a very long way from the days when he ran into walls and doors nonstop. Our boxer has also been home to home and passed around in fosters (we are likely his 7th or 8th home) and is super anxious. He was emaciated and in poor condition when we got him and we discovered he has some special medical needs because he can't use his tongue. He and my bull terrier began attacking each other and injuring each other. It is very scary for me and my children to experience and creates lots of tears and wound care with my boxer taking most of the injuries. Neither dog has ever shown aggression or had a history of fighting but yet here we are. They both want my attention and they food guard. I found Nicole's site and emailed her. To my surprise, she got back to me very quickly with her suggestions. I bought this book and I can't beleive with all the years of reading and learning about dogs and training, how much I didn't know! This book is a must for those who have had dogs for years and are just running into challenges as well as the novice pet owner. I can't thank Nicole enough for the work she put into this book to help me work on creating harmony and a safe environment for my pets. So far, my boys are able to tolerate each other outside and inside with protection (muzzle and leash) during training. I know all difficult challenges require work, but the fact that I have a step by step guide or dog Bible as we call it,makes this feel obtainable! Nicole cares about pets and people and has been highly responsive to questions as I go. I HIGHLY recommend every dog owner purchase a copy of this book!

As a guardian of a 5 dog home, I found this book very helpful, interesting, well written - there is nothing I can say that is negative about this book. One of my dogs is a major "police" dog, the type of dog that doesn't like other dogs to have fun and one of our issues was being able to play ball with the other dogs while she is around. By following the protocols in this book, we have successfully taught our dog how to let others play, without getting frustrated. And if she does get frustrated, she will run inside the house on cue. With all of the information out there on how to train your dog, I was surprised at how many new and useful techniques this book had, especially when introducing new dogs into our home. Ever heard of the "rag and wipe?" Me neither! But we use it now! This book covers issues with "petting wars", how to teach a solid "down", how to safely break up a fight, how to give your dogs chews without fighting - really all the issues with having more than one dog in the home, this book covers. It definitely set us up for future success.

I loved the way everything was presented from beginning to end. Easy to understand and great examples. I would recommend this book to those in need of help with their 4 legged friends. I purchased this because I brought another dog into my house. I saw jealousy from the dog I had for 4 years. This book helped me to understand how to handle the situation before it got out of control. Thank You

WOW! Nothing is missing in this very well thought out and written book. It's comprehensive in it's information, with step by step plans to help you help your dog. If you read this book from cover to cover and implement the instructions you WILL succeed. As a trainer, I completely agree with everything the author has written. If your dog has any signs of aggression, your dog is stressed and living with a stressed dog is stressful for the entire household, so don't wait. Get this book now and you'll all be happier.

Nicole has written several books that deal with real issues concerning dogs and their owners. She has a knack for clear, coherent steps towards resolving matters from Separation Anxiety, Overcoming Fear, Aggression and now she has tackled one of the most difficult issues of all..."Sibling Rivalry" among family dogs! I faced this 25 years ago, and it was heartbreaking! We were able to resolve the bloody battles, but I sure could have used her book then as I will use it now for my clients! I recommend this for any pet owner or trainer with clients facing this troubling issue. 5 stars is not enough!

Loved it! Great info for working through issues in multi dog homes. What to do, how to do it, and how to know you should not go it alone and instead hire a professional. Technical enough to be competent and concise but not overwhelming jargon or buzzwords. Good for multi dog homes without issues too - gives proactive and management advice to prevent problems with multiple dogs in a home. A dog trainer myself, I highly recommend this book!

This was very helpful and discussed many different scenarios. I have 2 dogs that have been together for 8 years since they were pups and they started getting aggressive towards one another. This was a great help towards solving this problem.

I got this book as soon as it came out. Nicole Wilde is one of the rock stars of dog training. My female dog bosses my male dog around like crazy. When they engaged in conflict I always blamed her because he always submits to her. But after reading the book I began to see how my boy would just walk up and take a toy out of her mouth and many other irritating little things that I believed she ignored. Not so these things were building up all day long. If you are considering this book, just get it. You won’t be disappointed.

This is a good overview of in-home dog aggression. Not a lot if new information for me but overall a good read.
