Revised in 2021. We are surrounded, inside and out, by bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microbes. Meanwhile, the spread of infectious microorganisms has threatened millions during recent pandemics. More worrisome has been news that dangerous bacteria are becoming resistant to antibiotics. Is there any hope in winning the war against infectious disease with this growing legion of microbial threats? In "Probiotics - Protection Against Infection" we find clear evidence for probiotics' ability to directly engage and defeat infectious microorganisms. We find new clinical proof of probiotics' ability to specifically boost the immune system while under attack. Here we find the scientific facts separated from the hype and the myths; and the amazing discovery that we can fight fire with fire, as long as we properly arm ourselves with the correct strategies for achieving and nurturing strong probiotic colonies.

HOW TO READ THIS BOOK
You now have in front of you one of the most comprehensive investigations regarding this topic from a natural perspective. This investigation involved a deep dive into the scientific research combined with clinical experience and a background in traditional medicines of the world. Scientific studies that were accepted and utilized in this investigation were peer-reviewed and published in prestigious scientific journals. A careful analysis of each study and its application to practical knowledge was conducted in order for the research to be included in this investigation.

This contrasts to many natural health texts today that propound various unproven and anecdotal techniques and strategies. But unfortunately, it can also replace some of the good-feel stories that can accompany anecdotal information.

This book was put together to provide the conclusions of this investigation in two layers. The first layer contains a general conclusion and practical understanding of the research. This is typically found in an introductory paragraph or two at the beginning of each topic and often also at the very end of that topic. Underneath and between these are the specific scientific studies that prove that general thesis offered.

These scientific studies have been curated and simplified to the extent possible to explain their usefulness and application. But at the same time, the information can become tedious for the average reader.

Therefore, if you are not that interested in reading the details of all the research, I would advise you to read the introduction and conclusion to each topic, and simply skim through the scientific research. If you decide you want to know more about this particular area, you can wade through the details of the research. Otherwise, you can glean an understanding of this topic in a fraction of the time and leave the remainder for reference.

Near the end of the book you will also find some concluding remarks about this information. This could be useful to understand the overarching messages of the text.

“One summer decades ago, as a pre-med major working my way through college, I hurt my back digging ditches. I visited a doctor who prescribed me with an opioid medication. I didn’t take the drug but this brought about a change of heart regarding my career in medicine. I decided against prescribing drugs and sought an alternative path. During college and afterwards, I got involved in the food business, working at farms, kitchens, and eventually management in the organic food and herbal supplement businesses. I also continued my natural health studies, and eventually completed post-graduate degrees in Naturopathy, Integrative Health Sciences and Natural Health Sciences. I also received diplomas in Herbalism, Homeopathy, Aromatherapy, Bach Flower Remedies, Colon Hydrotherapy, Blood Chemistry, Obstetrics, Clinical Nutritional Counseling, and certificates in Pain Management and Contact Tracing/Case Management along the way. During my practicum/internships, I was fortunate to have been mentored and trained under leading holistic M.D.s, D.O.s, N.D.s, acupuncturists, physical therapists, herbalists and massage therapists, working with them and their patients. I also did grand rounds at a local hospital and assisted in pain treatments. I was board certified as an Alternative Medical Practitioner and practiced for several years at a local medical/rehabilitation clinic advising patients on natural therapies.

“My journey into writing about alternative medicine began about 9:30 one evening after I finished with a patient at the clinic I practiced at over a decade ago. I had just spent two hours showing how improving diet, sleep and other lifestyle choices, and using selected herbal medicines with other natural strategies can help our bodies heal themselves. As I drove home that night, I realized the need to get this knowledge out to more people. So I began writing about natural health with a mission to reach those who desperately need this information and are not getting it in mainstream media. The health strategies in my books and articles are backed by scientific evidence combined with traditional wisdom handed down through natural medicines for thousands of years.

I am hoping to accomplish my mission as a young boy to help people. I am continuously learning and renewing my knowledge. I know my writing can sometimes be a bit scientific, but I am working to improve this. But I hope this approach also provides the clearest form of evidence that natural healing strategies are not unsubstantiated anecdotal claims. Natural health strategies, when done right, can be safer and more effective than many conventional treatments, with centuries of proven safety. This is why most pharmaceuticals are based on compounds from plants or other natural elements. I hope you will help support my mission and read some of my writings. They were written with love yet grounded upon science. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.”

I was amazed at the sheer number of randomized controlled double-blind human clinical studies (isn't that a mouthful?) on probiotics for all types of ailments, syndromes, and diseases! I also learned new things about the nature of supplementing with probiotics, which I hadn't fully realized before, such as their transient passing in the intestines, while still providing many benefits.

This is a good all-around book on probiotics, with a recent publication (2012), so the information is quite up to date.

Thank you Case Adams for putting this book together!

However, I must say, I feel the writing style and editing were wanting. There were some obvious typos found throughout the book, and the style and flow felt inconsistent. Abbreviations were used at different times; the names of specific species and strains were used differently from one page to the next; some scientific terms were not clarified to the reader; abbreviations for immunoglobulins, interleukins; and other biochemicals were inconsistent; etc. I think a second edition could use a major cleanup, as well an overhaul to the section on clinical studies to read more for the layman. (IL-10, IL-2, IgA, TNF-alpha, goodness me! I get lost fast!)

Basically, the content is great and well researched, but the writing style and editing did not match the quality of information. I was very close to giving this book a 4-star rating, but I feel that the unfounded 1-star rating by another user needs to be canceled out.

After years of trying to find out why I am always constipated - meaning a hard stool that is often difficult to eliminate - I was really hoping this book might spell out exactly which probiotic/prebiotic might do the trick for me. This book is excellent and very easy to read. It is also well researched. I have had a bit of luck with probiotics recently, but not to any great extent - still somewhat painful and never a sense of complete elimination. I plan on re-reading it to see if I am missing something or in my case, probably need to put 2+2 together! Excellent reference on probiotics!

This book is a wonder. I have learned so much in this book about beneficial microbes and our relationship with them to our immune system. This book should be read by every doctor and medical practitioner everywhere, the information here is revolutionary. I believe one day we will look at the state of western medicine and disease and it will look just like we look back on using leeches and bleeding in the past. This book brings together information I have gleaned from many sources in a clear and well documented form. Highly recommend!

Haven't finished it, basically thorough thumbing through, in no particular order. Looks as though it will add to the body of knowledge that I've been acquiring/

This is a tremendous book for the person who has a desire to learn about our bodies immune system and how it keeps us healthy, wealthy and wise. It does require the reader to have a basic understanding of the biological processes that the human body goes through and to follow these interactions that the immune system uses.

I think it is GREAT.

There is a lot of information inside the book about probiotics. It pretty much covers all points necessary in order to understand what the bacterias are all about. This was a medium read for me. There is a lot of science in the book. This book identifies that probiotics help with digestion, elimination, and... the big one... the immune system. Read the book.

An informative and comprehensive book on probiotics. I bought the book because I wanted to know more about probiotics, which ones to take, when to take and why, it told me everything I needed to know and more and all in the one book.

If you only want to read one book on probiotics then this is it!

Will buy more books written by this author, in fact my next read is The Science of Leaky Gut Syndrome: Intestinal Permeability and Digestive Health.
