This guide book by Charles Tait offers a wonderfully readable approach to the Outer Hebrides, the islands located in the Atlantic Ocean west of mainland Scotland. It offers good information on how to get there, how to get around, and what to see. The offerings cover a broad mixture of wildlife, history, traditional crafts, and above all, the natural landscape of the islands, for the enterprising traveler who is willing to explore, whether by bus, car, bike and/or on foot.

The guide opens with a brief but excellent introduction about the Outer Hebrides, including their geography and natural history. Each major island gets a chapter, listing population centers, natural and man-made sights, museums, and the like. A summation by island at the end provides handy reference listings.

The book has lots of maps to show the reader where things are, although additional coverage in the form of OS Explorer maps is highly recommended for extended hiking and biking. The mixture of Gaelic and English place names may be a bit of challenge in following the narrative in places. The color photography of the landscape, the wildlife, and the various archeological sites is especially enticing. Well recommended as a planning guide for a visit.

If you have any plans to visit the Islands (or are just interested), this book is an excellent resource with a wealth of information. Well-written - Mr. Tait obviously knows the Islands well - the history, culture, geography, flora and fauna. Highly recommended!

Wow--I waited a while for delivery (perhaps this book is an import)? That said, it is well detailed and focused on the islands themselves including important sites to visit, geology, and history of the area--not just the typical emphasis on lodging and restaurants. Suggested itineraries are included. I'm taking this one with me for sure when I visit.

Very useful information; well laid-out.
We were in the Outer Hebrides for a week in 2015.
I wish we had it with us then.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have to really see the Outer Hebrides

Great book if doing the outer Isles. The book has every sight you could think of visiting and includes not only the main ,easily accessible islands but the outliers as well. The book has good historical info and gives grid references so you can actually find some of the more obscure locations. It's worth noting that the book focuses on the sights so don't expect the where to stay/where to eat info you tend to get other books. However as it's so easy to find that stuff online.

The Outer Hebrides book is fantastic! So was The Orkney book, but it was The Orkney book that had the terrible binding. The very first time I opened it, the binding came apart, leaving chunks of the book completely falling out :(

Excellent book packed with information and advice on where to go and what to see. We are planning a trip and this book has been a great help. The print is a little small, but it is clear to read. It also gives you background information on the history, geology, environment etc, so it is educational too.

We're off to the Outer Hebrides for a break later this year and I bought this book to give us ideas as to routes/sights/hotels and so on and it has proved very useful. It has beautiful photographs as well. Obviously as we haven't actually been to the Hebrides yet I cannot vouch for the book's accuracy, but it looks super and has good maps.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent background to the islands

Excellent background to the islands, with good tales of the history, geology, flora and fauna, and suggested tourist itineraries.
Not the book to choose for where to stay and eat; nor does it mention the Lewis distillery and where to find it.
But overall it explains the Western Isles very well and encourages a visit or two.
