Ideas have consequences. And sometimes those ideas can be squeezed into slogans, slapped on bumper stickers and tweeted into cyberspace. These compact messages coming at us from all directions often compress in a few words entire ethical systems. It turns out that there's a lot more to the ideas behind these slogans--ideas that need to be sorted out before we make important moral decisions as individuals or as societies. In this revised and expanded edition of Steve Wilkens's widely-used text, the author has updated his introductions to basic ethical systems:

  • cultural relativism
  • ethical egoism
  • utilitarianism
  • behaviorism
  • situation ethics
  • Kantian ethics
  • virtue ethics
  • natural law ethics
  • divine command theory

He has also added two new chapters:

  • evolutionary ethics
  • narrative ethics

With clarity and wit Wilkens unpacks the complicated ideas behind the slogans and offers Christian evaluations of each.

This was a text I used for a college ethics class and provided an easy to read overview of several ethical systems. The “bumper sticker” analogy is very clever but also extremely thought provoking. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Wilkins’s perspective and gained insight into my own thoughts and actions.

Last year I read Dr. Steve Wilkens book “Beyond Bumper Sticker Ethics.” Having been away from academic reading for a decade or two, this was a great introduction to the most important theories of ethics. In the book, Dr. Wilkens has placed the deep and vital (but some-times voluminous) ideas of the world’s greatest ethical systems and thinkers at a level where many, many more people can ascertain and process them.
The reading is engaging and covers a significant expanse of ethical systems (Cultural relativism; the Ethical egoism of Ayn Rand; B.F. Skinner’s Behaviorism; Evolutionary Ethics; Utilitarianism; Kantian Ethics; the virtue ethics of classical Greek philosophy; narrative ethics, situation ethics, natural law ethics and Divine command theory).
Condensing these great systems without diluting their ethos is no small feat, but it has been done here. By “Putting the cookies on the lower shelf” Dr. Wilkens has performed a great service to the English speaking world. I am currently reading through this book for a second time.

Great book when it comes to explaining the different ethics that do exist now-a-days. I do recommend this book for anyone whom is interested in the different ethics that do exist and want to learn more about them.

This book was required for my seminary ethics class.. It was very informative and helped me to grasp the subject of ethics, which isn't easy to grasp at times. I would recommend it to anyone as a starting point to study on the subject.

This is a very good introductory text in ethical systems. Eleven systems are briefly presented with a summary of the view the positives and potential problems. Everyone us a system, but most of us have never thought about why we make our moral decisions. You will end up with many questions, but that is what life is all about.

This was my textbook for my “introduction to ethics” class, and I was disappointed that the book is incredibly biased about how it presents different ethical systems. The book doesn’t say it’s Christian on the cover, but apparently it’s by a Christian author and published under a Christian publisher. Despite the strong bias that the book was written with, it is a well-written and easy to understand book.

Used it for ethics class. It provides some ideas about some ethical theories and what I loved most about it is that it has a Christian point of view - which I believe to be the only perfect ethical theory.

I liked the introduction to the differing ethical views but struggled to know how to relate the positions to myself.
