World-renowned physicist and bestselling author Stephen Hawking presents a revolutionary look at the momentous discoveries that changed our perception of the world with this first-ever compilation of seven classic works on physics and astronomy. His choice of landmark writings by some of the world's great thinkers traces the brilliant evolution of modern science and shows how each figure built upon the genius of his predecessors. On the Shoulders of Giants includes, in their entirety, On the Revolution of Heavenly Spheres by Nicolaus Copernicus; Principia by Sir Isaac Newton; The Principle of Relativity by Albert Einstein; Dialogues Concerning Two Sciences by Galileo Galilei with Alfonso De Salvio; plus Mystery of the Cosmos, Harmony of the World, and Rudolphine Tables by Johannes Kepler. It also includes five critical essays and a biography of each featured physicist, written by Hawking himself.

Stephen Hawking's ability to make science understandable and compelling to a lay audience was established with the publication of his first book, A Brief History of Time, which has sold nearly 10 million copies in 40 languages. Hawking has authored or participated in the creation of numerous other popular science books, including The Universe in a Nutshell, A Briefer History of Time, On the Shoulders of Giants, The Illustrated On the Shoulders of Giants, and George's Secret Key to the Universe.

The side worse than the other two

The side worse than the other two
It's a gift for my boyfriend but when I opened it to check on it the cover was bent on the top, bottom, and side. The side worse than the other two. There was also some sticky stuff on the cover? The spine is also ripped.

This book is massive and holds a lot of weight. A hardcover would support the binding much better than the paperback I purchased.

The five selections from these giants of Science reveal Hawking's genius as an editor.

Who knew that Copernicus invoked the Pythagoreans already on the first page of his world-shaking tome, and then that he'd claim they inspired his heliocentric ideas? The Church stepped in and banned for two hundred years the "Pythagorean doctrine of the earth's mobility and the sun's immobility, a doctrine which is false and completely contrary to divine Scripture" (John Hopkins University Press, 1978).

And why does Hawking include only a single chapter of Kepler's 'Harmony of the World?' Is it because that's where Kepler illustrates his Music of the Planets, a notion he borrowed from the Pythagoreans?

Quite a ride.

This is not a book that someone should read; it is a book that everyone should be reading -again and again. It is not merely the science it affords, it is mostly the way science reaches out to less scientifically educated people, to non-professional scientists, to simple people like myself.
I feel awed but not intimidated by these Giants because I very well understand their commitment -why do something if you are not committed to it? And when you are committed to something for every man and not only for your vile self, that makes you a giant.
I do believe that this book can teach us all the secret for all, just one word. PERSEVERANCE.

It is a simple read, easy to understand book on the universe. I wasn't interested in reading abt the different. Galaxies, but my husband encouraged me that once I read the book, I'd understand the galaxies better and my interest would grow. Well, he was right. I now look for books to read from this author on other topics.

Excellent idea to condense in just one volume the greatest scientific works up to date. One can navigate through the thoughts of physicists and astronomers from one century to the next, becoming a witness of the evolution of our understanding of the universe.

I bought this in the hopes it was more of an introduction to the concepts of Physics that are most notable in our history. I soon realized I was well out of my depth on this one. The introductions were excellent but the works by the brilliant authors were more or less original. I simply did not understand it. My fault perhaps for not doing more research before I bought it. If you have a good background in these areas, Im sure its a great read. If not, you may want to look at something a little more accessible.

The information on early astronomers was exciting for amateur astronomers and detailed enough that all levels would gain from reading the book. Math majors will be surprised at degree of accuracy the early astronomers were able to attain with their primitive instruments.

The package arrived safely. The book was not packed inside the box, but it was in good conditions. The courier company that Amazon assigned me by default, ampm, I do not recommend it.
As for the content, it is not at all intuitive, but we are reading documents from hundreds of years ago. I find it an integrated and enjoyable edition.
The paper is ok, not with much quality nor with low quality.
