Review

“An entertaining Southern domestic cozy.”—Mystery Scene

“Well-established characters, family concerns, wry humor, and small-town busybodies solidify the plot of this delightful cozy.”—
Library Journal

“Best of all, the spunky, strong-willed Aurora Teagarden is the most entertaining surprise.”—
Southern Scribe Reviews

“Charlaine Harris has taken her heroine in a completely different direction and readers will be happy to see the protagonist find the double dose of happiness she so richly deserves. There is a lot of action in this delightful cozy, and not all of it is directed at solving the homicide…a terrific cozy, one readers will want to put on their keeper shelves.”—Midwest Book Review

Charlaine Harris was born in Tunica, Mississippi, and raised in the Mississippi River Delta area in the middle of a cotton field. Though her early works consisted largely of poems about ghosts and, later, teenage angst, she wrote plays when she attended Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee and started writing novels a few years later.

After publishing two stand-alone mysteries, Harris launched a light-hearted mystery series 'starring' Georgia librarian Aurora Teagarden. The first of the eight books, Real Murders, was shortlisted for Best Novel in the 1990 Agatha Awards. In 1996, she released the first of the much darker Shakespeare mysteries, featuring the amateur sleuth Lily Bard, a karate student who makes her living cleaning houses.

Charlaine Harris then wrote the first of her Southern vampire mysteries starring Sookie Stackhouse, the quirky, telepathic waitress who works in a bar in the fictional Northern Louisiana town of Bon Temps. Dead Until Dark won the Anthony Award for Best Paperback Mystery. It also won Harris a whole new fan club of devoted readers and pushed her into the bestseller lists. The Sookie Stackhouse series, in which Sookie has to deal with vampires, werecreatures and other supernatural folk - not to mention her own complicated love life - was also instrumental in creating the urban fantasy genre.

Sookie Stackhouse also enchanted Alan Ball, creator of the smash TV show Six Feet Under, who took an option and wrote and directed the pilot episode for True Blood himself. It was an instant hit when it premiered in the US, and that success was repeated when it was first aired in Britain last year. The second season of TRUE BLOOD will start this spring.

Harris's newest series features Harper Connelly, a young woman who, after being struck by lightning, finds herself able to locate the bodies of the dead and to determine the cause of their death. There are four Harper titles (Grave Sight, Grave Surprise, An Ice Cold Grave and Grave Secret).

Charlaine Harris is a member of the Mystery Writers of America and the American Crime Writers League. She is a member of the board of Sisters in Crime, and alternates with Joan Hess as president of the Arkansas Mystery Writers Alliance. She is married, the mother of three, and lives in a small town in Southern Arkansas. When she is not writing her own books, she reads omnivorously!

Once again Charlaine has a thoroughly ordinary female protagonist repeatedly thrown into extraordinary circumstances. Aurora is perhaps the most outwardly hum-drum of all of Charlaine's protagonists; she is a librarian, complete with modest cardigans and horn-rimmed glasses. But don't let appearances (or occupation) fool you. Aurora is just as interesting and lovable as Charlaine's other leading ladies, maybe even more so because she is aware and makes fun of her outwardly plain-Jane appearances. Like Lily, Sookie and Harper, Aurora is an appealing protagonist because despite self-doubt, when push-comes-to-shove Aurora becomes a brave and ballsy heroine.

There is a lot of suspended belief in the Aurora series - throughout 8 books we are expected to believe that Aurora just keeps stumbling and unwittingly becoming involved in all the murders around town. But because Charlaine beautifully incorporates the bizarre with the mundane of Aurora's everyday life, and because she constantly makes a joke of the coincidences, you really don't mind the improbability inherent in the series.

`Aurora' is a fascinating series if you're coming to them after reading Harris's `Sookie Stackhouse' books. Aurora is surprisingly similar to Sookie; both are women whom, at the start of their respective series, are really unaware of their femininity and have lived fairly sheltered lives. Sookie has been a loner because of her telepathic `handy-cap', and Aurora because of low self-confidence and a focus on her work. Throughout their series both Aurora and Sookie are put through trials and tribulations that force them to come out of their shells and measure their mettle. But perhaps the ladies biggest connection lies in their romantic lives. As you compare both series you can pinpoint certain consistencies between the romantic entanglements. In both series Charlaine prefers multiple possible partners for her leading ladies, and enjoys keeping readers guessing as to whom they will ultimately end up with. In the `Aurora' and `Sookie' books Charlaine also puts her heroines through the romantic ringer - be warned, there are up's and down's that will tug at your heartstrings as you live vicariously through Aurora.

Unlike Sookie, Aurora has a tight family unit. This is really Charlaine's only series that explores family dynamics and it is refreshing to read Charlaine's funny take on family matters.

Once again, the `Aurora' books are definitely murder-mystery. Charlaine has a very devious mind when it comes to writing crime, and it is a tricky pleasure to try and figure out the `whodunnit' along with Aurora. But `Sookie Stackhouse' fans should once again be warned that there is no element of urban fantasy in Charlaine's debut series.

With a whopping 8 books in the series, Charlaine Harris has said in interviews that she has more ideas for Aurora Teagarden, but can't see herself finding the time between Sookie books to pen a 9th novel. This is a shame. The eighth `Aurora' book (`Poppy done to Death') did have a certain open-endedness to it - not so that it frustrates and leaves readers hanging, but just enough that you'll wish Charlaine would continue with the series.

I don't love the `Aurora Teagarden' books as much as Harris's `Lily Bard', `Sookie Stackhouse' or `Harper Connelly' series'. But I do love them. I love Aurora, I love her leading men and I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves Charlaine's writing and a good murder-mystery.

This is one of Ms. Harris' earlier books and it shows in the writing. There are a few plot errors from book to book in the series but mainly noticeable if you read them back to back like I did. Overall a good book and only slightly predictable ending. It is very different from the made for T.V. movies!

I enjoyed this one. The characters are interesting and well developed. Can all of this happen to one person? Likely not but still a fun read

I really enjoy how Charlaine Harris writes. I will admit that of all her series, Aurora is my least favorite. Still, this is a tight little story with enjoyable enough characters to spend time with. The books are not formulaic as so many cozy mysteries can be, and one can spend a few pleasant hours speculating on whodunnit, visiting with familiar characters, and catching up on Aurora's life. All while waiting for the next Midnight book to come out.

This book dragged along some and lacked the flare of past books in this series, but still a good read.

As with all the books in this series - and in Charlaine Harris's other series for that matter! - this book was entertaining and addictive. I stayed up to 2 am to finish it! Luckily it is the weekend so I could do that.

My only concern, there are no more books in this series! I hope her publisher signs her up for a few more because there were 2 very important - oh! make that 3 - story lines started in this book that I want to know what happens next! I always hate it when the reviews give too much of the story away, so I won't spoil the book for you by telling you what they are, but they are certainly surprising!

My recommendation - buy the book, heck buy the whole series! The first book does start a bit slow, but after that you get to know the characters and their quirks plus Ms Harris's humor is wonderful. You will enjoy them all.

Something is amiss in Charlaine Harris's writing world, it seems. She is an amazing writer and the errors and disturbing plot lines that commenters mentions are puzzling. The inconsistencies are troubling. Maybe she is focusing on her HBO success. I look forward to her future work and hope she will get better editors and no pressure to kill off characters or shoot books out too quickly or whatever is going on now. Maybe it's the way the publishing business is going.

Anyway, I was pretty mad at the beginning of this book. Mad about the ending in the previous book in the series, which the Booklist review pretty much spoiled with its review, and mad that the "incident" was being treated so cavalierly at the beginning of this book.

I was determined to finish this book and about a half way in, I was drawn in. Yes, that's much longer than I give most books, but Charlaine Harris's talent deserved that. The book finally ended nicely and was not a bad read. I will miss this character with whom I presume Harris if finished. There are places for the characters go, but I don't gather she's interested in keeping so many series going. Her heart didn't seem to be in this one.

If this is your first book, don't read it, go back to the beginning of the series and enjoy them.

I enjoyed this mystery. I have a hard time because the movies are so different but enjoy the books and wish the movies were more lole the books. I dont believe they should change the theme so much. I wish I would have read the books first but didnt realize they were from books.
