This is a really nice resource for building vocabulary by focusing on the most commonly-used words. The methodology detailed in the front matter is impressive - the top 5,000 words were selected after an analysis of millions of films, newspapers, magazines, political and other commonly-used publications. A sample sentence is provided for each term, which is really helpful. This book also has some excellent indexes that make it user-friendly, such as an alphabetical index and a part of speech index. It also has some helpful thematic call-outs highlighting need-to-know terminology across several themes, including cuisine, parts of the body, and about 10 or 15 others. I've been using this book alongside the version of it that has been posted in Quizlet, where I can hear the pronunciation and do some drills on the terms I don't yet know. This is a great resource!

I learned French in college for two years up to intermediate level and another 9 months at the Alliance Francaise after that, yet my French was practically non existent, so I gave up studying.

I believe that part of the problem is the way the language is being taught, we learned vocabularies which are not really relevant to use in adult conversations, like " I brush my teeth in the bathroom". Who'd say something like that in a dinner conversation?. Hence people can only expect to start making meaningful conversations around advanced level course, which is really too slow & boring.

The way I use this book is by memorising words as many as I can (periodically) & going back over it again and again. I also frequently watch French movies, listens to French radio podcast, and read French articles on the internet.

I am pleased to say that my French has improved quite fast considering that I am studying on my own.

This book is very useful!!!

I bought this book because although my grammar and knowledge of sentence structure are servicable, I still feel stymied by lack of sufficient vocabulary. I would have guessed that I know about 3000 words well enough to use them. I was surprized to find that it took me about ten minutes of looking through the least common words in this book to find one I didn't know well enough to use in most of its forms. Sadly though, I still can't read an article in Le Monde without a dictionary handy. I now know that my vocabulary is probably closer to 10,000 words. So I would guess that I will need to get to around 20,000 words before the dictionary gathers any dust.

However, this book would have been very handy when I was first starting out. If you know the words in this book, you will have enough vocabulary be able to get away from using an English/French dictionary and move to a good French dictionary like my favorite "Le Robert Micro". This is a big milestone in learning French and this book can help you get there. Use it as a guide to which words to learn first. But don't just accept the definitions given. They are inadequate in most cases and almost useless in some cases. Look up each word in at least one good dictionary, preferably at least two. Also, be aware that the word frequency is mainly based on written French. For instance, "merde" and "ouais" are listed as the 2376th and 1928th most common words. However, if you eavesdrop on a conversation in a Paris cafe you will learn that many Frenchmen seem incapable of forming a sentence that does not contain one or both of them!

This book gives you the words that people actually use often. Every other vocab book that I've read gives you words the author thinks you need to know. There is no point for me to spend time with words I won't come across. Instead of learning words about water skiing and gardening I'd rather read this book.

This book is one of the most informative resources for French I have ever purchased. It is full of practical and effective strategies for improving or initiating language study. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to go beyond the scripted often impractical language resources that are normally found in many programs.

I purchased this product off of a recommendation from a language site called Tower of Babelfish. It is an excellent resource for French vocabulary because it lists the words according to the frequency of their use AND there are examples of how the words are used in sentences. Seeing them used in context makes them easier to remember.

This book has really helped me expand my vocabulary. I've gone through the book and put the words that I didn't know into the flashcard programs - BYKI and ANKI. I find that using this book has greatly improved my reading as well as oral comprehension.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money!

It's an academic piece, with all the necessary introduction, description of the parameters and methodology used and attributions at the beginning - all of which I enjoyed myself by reading, but if it's all high-blown academic waffle to you, ignore it! The value of all that studious discipline is the quality of the actual frequency list available to we mere mortals at a fraction of the cost to prepare it!

And its practical value in learning the French language should not be underestimated; It enables the learner to learn the words he/she/it is most likely to hear or read first! What a boon! Buy it now...

4.0 out of 5 stars Preis/Leistung absolut Top!
Reviewed in Germany on February 2, 2017

Also meine Meinung: Top Top Top! Würde es jeder Zeit wieder kaufen und überlege mir bereits mir als nächstes direkt die spanische Version zuzulegen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting book, and useful for vocabulary building
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 19, 2013
This proved to be a useful book to boost my French vocabulary, allowing me to focus on the most common vocabulary first, meaning that I was making the best use of my time learnings words I was more likely to hear and use, rather than learning words arbitrarily, or groups of words from arbitrary categories. It also has handy groups of related words if you decide to do something like learn all the words for types of fruit at once, for example.

This is currently not an orthodox method of learning a language, but the technique is quite a powerful, I believe.

Tim Ferris, author of a number of 'Life Hacking' books, recommends learning vocabulary based on frequency (see, for example, [...]) and there are mobile phone apps that drill you on vocabulary based on word frequency (e.g. [...]).

Learning by word frequency is also a technique often used to teach a first language (see, for example, [...]) but oddly this doesn't seem to be used as much for learning a second language, with school kids often set lists of words to learn such as that list of all of the names for fruits or words for all of the amenities typically found in a city centre. Whilst many of these words are no doubt useful to learn at some point, I don't think it's the most productive method of building up a working vocabulary. For that you need to learn the most common words first, and make sure you know them all well, before learning the words for "kumquat" or "town hall".

Recommended for the beginner-to-intermediate language learner.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good concept, poor implementation
Reviewed in Germany on March 11, 2017
The concept is good but the example sentences are terrible. They are provided without any context and the difficulty of the vocabulary exceeds in many cases that of the word they are supposed to illustrate.

Tipp: Save your money and download the Anki flashcard deck from the internet. The Anki deck also contains audio recordings for the example sentences.
