Global Englishes (Routledge English Language Introductions) 3rd Edition
Purchase options and add-ons
Routledge English Language Introductions cover core areas of language study and are one-stop resources for students.
Assuming no prior knowledge, books in the series offer an accessible overview of the subject, with activities, study questions, sample analyses, commentaries, and key readings – all in the same volume. The innovative and flexible ‘two-dimensional’ structure is built around four sections – introduction, development, exploration, and extension – which offer self-contained stages for study. Each topic can also be read across these sections, enabling the reader to build gradually on the knowledge gained.
Global Englishes, Third Edition, previously published as World Englishes, has been comprehensively revised and updated and provides an introduction to the subject that is both accessible and comprehensive.
Key features of this best-selling textbook include:
- coverage of the major historical, linguistic, and sociopolitical developments in the English language from the start of the seventeenth century to the present day
- exploration of the current debates in global Englishes, relating to its uses as mother tongue in the US, UK, Antipodes, and post-colonial language in Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and lingua franca across the rest of the globe, with a new and particularly strong emphasis on China
- a range of texts, data and examples draw from emails, tweets and newspapers such as The New York Times, China Daily and The Straits Times
- readings from key scholars including Alastair Pennycook, Henry G. Widdowson and Lesley Milroy
- activities that engage the reader by inviting them to draw on their own experience and consider their orientation to the particular topic in hand.
Global Englishes, Third Edition provides a dynamic and engaging introduction to this fascinating topic and is essential reading for all students studying global Englishes, English as a lingua franca, and the spread of English in the world today.

Editorial Reviews
Review
'I have been using the previous editions in my teaching and found it a great one-stop resource for both students with no prior linguistic knowledge, and linguistic students new to the debates of World Englishes. Students in my Common Core courses particularly appreciate the easy-to-read yet comprehensive approach to the subject, as well as the insightfully designed activities and discussion points. The new edition, Global Englishes, continues this excellent tradition with a much-needed addition to Englishes in China, and timely updates on the rapid and ever changing development of Englishes in this globalized world. It will certainly continue to be one of the most accessible and useful resources for students.' Katherine Chen, Assistant Professor, School of English, University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong

I found the book's subject matter to be highly controversial. I would think that if English is not your first language that you will like the book a bit more. For example, it's alright if you can't pronounce the word, don't even try to sound like the Native English person. You are just speaking the English you own. You like pidgin English more because it reflects your culture? Not a problem, rejoice in your individuality.
If you are a teacher of English from a Native country (US, Britain, Australia, South Africa) and attempt to put into practice what you have read don't expect your teaching contract will be renewed, (nor should it). It's important to explore topics such as those posed by Jenkins but to give them an academic voice it also means that people will carry the banner forward. That's the problem. This is one book that is quite easy to put down. You will likely be quite relieved when it is over. I know I am. I firmly believe that books such as this are filled with ideas and concepts that will be laughed at by future generations. There are good writers and bad writers. Jenkins is the latter. It's a very difficult read, so be prepared.

The book covers most of the areas of research that are concerned with the controversial topic of the global spread of English and the consequent process of diversification that this language has been undergoing as a result of its contact with diverse local languages.
The book is divided into four sections (A, Introduction; B, Development; C, Exploration; D, Extension), containing eight units each. Every theme is developed horizontally (i.e. from section A to section D), so that the teacher may decide how deep their students should go into each topic. Besides, it is not necessary to follow a linear reading of the book, and the teacher is free to select and order the units according to their needs.
As one of the most outstanding linguists in the field of English as a lingua franca (ELF), Jenkins provides a comprehensive view of the historical, social, economic, and political reasons that have led to the internationalisation of English today. In addition, she takes into consideration the pedagogical implications of ELF and how English language teaching (ELT) is going to be affected by it.
Jenkins, however, does not tend impose her own point of view, especially when she deals with the most controversial issues. In fact, she prefers to leave some of the fundamental questions open to the reader (i.e. the student), and provide them with relevant information and appropriate contributions that help them make up their mind.
Finally, the manual contains excellent activities for the students and a section called "Further reading" that is very useful for those who intend to write university papers on specific topics.
