Class reunions: a time for memories—good, bad, and, as Virgil Flowers is about to find out, deadly—in this New York Times bestselling thriller from John Sandford.

Virgil knows the town of Trippton, Minnesota, a little too well. A few years back, he investigated the corrupt—and as it turned out, homicidal—local school board, and now the town’s back in view with more alarming news: A woman’s been found dead, frozen in a block of ice. There’s a possibility that it might be connected to a high school class of twenty years ago that has a mid-winter reunion coming up, and so, wrapping his coat a little tighter, Virgil begins to dig into twenty years’ worth of traumas, feuds, and bad blood. In the process, one thing becomes increasingly clear to him. It’s true what they say: High school is murder.

Review

Praise for Deep Freeze

“Along the way to the satisfying ending, Virgil displays the rough humor and rough justice that make him such an appealing character.”—
Publishers Weekly

“The tenth Flowers novel is a knowing portrait of small-town life layered into a very well plotted mystery. Virgil understands that, in small towns, no one ever outgrows high school, and he uses that knowledge to unravel both mysteries by dissecting the relationships and economic realities in the town. One of the very best novels in a superior series.”—
Booklist (starred review)

“The reader’s quest to discover the whole truth will propel them forward, where [Sandford] has plenty of twists (and more than a few laughs) planted along the way.
Deep Freeze is easily one of Sandford’s best Virgil Flowers novels yet.”—The Real Book Spy

“Add a gripping storyline, a generous helping of exquisitely conceived characters and laugh-out-loud humor that produce explosive guffaws, not muted chuckles, and you’re in for the usual late-night, don’t-even-think-of-stopping treat when Flowers hits town.”—
Richmond Times-Dispatch

Praise for
Escape Clause

“You can't make this stuff up, but, thankfully, Sandford can. Imaginative, funny, and thoroughly engaging.”—
Booklist (starred review)

“An outstanding novel.”—
Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Perfect entertainment for readers whose hearts skip a beat when they worry that the hero won't be in time.”—
Kirkus Reviews

“The funny, smart, and always entertaining Virgil Flower is back....Some writers get better with age while others get worse. Sandford is like fine wine. The more he ages, the better he is.
Escape Clause proves it.”—The Huffington Post

“One of the keys to John Sandford's success as an author is his ability to take us inside the twisted psyches of his villains.”—
Minneapolis Star-Tribune

I love this character. He is down to earth and you can put yourself in the story. The story line is captivating from the start

Enjoyable crime novel, full of humor and interesting characters. Virgil Flowers is a Minnesota State Investigator who is sent back to his home town to sort out the killing of a prominent businesswoman and assist in the suppression of a Barbie sex doll business. Flowers is among old friends as he launches a full-fledged procedural to winnow down the murder suspects.

The twist here is that the reader is told who the murderer is long before the investigation begins. Author John Sanford manages to pull this approach off through clever character development and interaction. This includes a duel of wits between Investigator Flowers and the killer. The story is never boring even though the conclusion is visible throughout.

While this isn't an overly complex story, there's intelligence and plenty of entertainment here for the most demanding crime fan.

I am one of those people who have read all of the Virgil Flowers series along with the Prey Series and over the years they have given me a lot of reading pleasure and I am always excited when a new offering is released.

Virgil Flowers, better known as ‘that F – ing Flowers’ returns to the smallish town of Tippton, Minnesota where in a previous novel Virgil arrests (for murder) the entire school board, breaks up a large Meth Lab and shuts down a dog stealing ring. While this repeat location seems to have disturbed some readers I personally was delighted. The reason for this is that a few of the familiar characters make reappearances and there is less ‘road time’ for Virgil. One of the few aspects of both the Flowers series and the Prey series is that many pages consists of characters spending page after page dashing here and there and the author, Sandford, gives a road by road, turn by turn and café by café account of each and every trip which I find to me more filler than adding to the story. In this novel we have much less windshield time and more story and plot.

It is cold – the dead of winter which complicates things. The leading banker in down is found murdered by a fisherman and there is no motive but a large group of possible suspects. Virgil must do some deep digging and does it in a typical Flowers fashion.

I have to admit that during the first 50 or so pages of this book I had a smile of my face and actually laughed (or giggled) throughout much of it. I found the dialog between characters to be as amusing and sharp as ever and I found the ‘whodunit’ aspect of the story to be up to Sandford’s normal high standards. The reading was smooth and I found myself drawn to not only Virgil but a number of other characters inhabiting this work. I must admit that I read this from cover to cover with very little letting off until I was finished...my wife did the same thing after I had finished...we both enjoyed this one.

As a side note – I have lived and traveled all over the U.S. over the past 70 years and spent time in Minnesota and have traveled through the state; always in the summer. I doubt seriously if I will ever make a trip there during the winter....Good grief – I hate the cold and admire those that thrive on it.

I cannot wait for the next ‘Flowers” offering.

I don't know how John Sandford does it. His novels are compulsively readable, and un-put-down-able. The book I read before this took me an entire weekend and several days out of the ensuing week. I finished Deep Freeze in three evenings, after work.

The Sandford formula is not complex. Someone in rural Minnesota commits a murder; the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (Is there really such a thing?) dispatches veteran investigator Virgil Flowers, and through his knowledge accumulated through experience, he solves the crime. The stories always unfold in a smooth, water-streaming-downhill flow.

In Deep Freeze, readers know who the killer is before knowing there's been a crime. Flowers arrives in Trippton, Minnesota--a town he's visited before-- to look into matters. En route, he is directed by a Federal colleague to aid an investigation into the illegal manufacture and distribution of talking Barbie dolls that have been altered to say some naughty things. Thus the exasperated Virgil rattled the entire population of Trippton by looking into two vastly different crimes at the same time. Does he solve them both? Well, my friends, books are out there to be read. I can promise that reading Deep Freeze is like sitting down in a comfortable chair with a party sized bag of chips, vowing to eat only a few, and then the next thing you know, the bag is empty. An enormously fun and easy read, and a worthy entry in the Sandford canon.

The Virgil Flowers series from John Sandford are always a delightful way to spend time reading. I can't put the book down until it is finished. Some of the previous books were a bit more entertaining than this one, nevertheless a good book.

Dave Birkmann is guilty. No doubt in my mind. And the author confirms that for us in the opening few pages of this very entertaining book. If you enjoy working out who the killer is,then this book probably is not for you. If,on the other hand, you enjoy a book populated with quirky characters and wacky storylines, then put this on your TBR pile.

Gina Hemming is a local woman made good. Wealthy, pretty and far out of Dave Birkmann’s league. That doesn’t damper Dave’s spirits though and when a high school reunion puts him within smooching distance of Gina,he boldly makes his move. Unsurprisingly,Dave’s advances are rebuffed and it at this point that Dave finds out the true cost of rejection. Although the killer is revealed to us at the start of the book, this does not in any way detract from the story. The entertainment here is provided by the locals and the interaction they have with each other and with Virgil, the detective trying to solve Gina’s murder.

A parallel storyline involving doctored Barbie dolls is a stroke of genius and I found myself laughing out loud when Vergil has the dubious pleasure of listening to one of the corrupted dolls. Even Ken isn’t safe.Barbie’s significant other has been anatomically altered. It is all very naughty and unsurprisingly,Mattel want a stop put to it and quickly. An LA detective is sent with a stack of cease and desist orders to be served to the miscreant making the highly excitable dolls but finding her proves to be far from straight forward. She enlists Virgil’s help but Virgil already has his hands full trying to work out who bashed Gina Hemming. He does lend a hand of course but has he bitten off more than he can chew?

Perfectly paced and packed with stand out characters. This book is well worth your time.

I don't know why I downloaded this..
I never had read any novels by John Sandford
However, it's a gripping plot. People who like movies like Fargo (or TV series like Fargo) would love this small town crime thriller. And I love Fargo..
It's not a literary masterpiece, just a fun time read. But a really good one.
