Integrating Western psychological understanding with ancient Eastern and wisdom traditions, Siegel addresses how spiritual resonance is achieved within the psychotherapeutic process in The Sacred Path of the Therapist. Readers will learn how mindfulness practices and attunement can help them move clients toward recovery and beyond, allowing full potential to emerge within a shared coherent field of awakening consciousness. Topics include translating transpersonal theory into practice, understanding the human energy field, and the integration of psychotherapy and spiritual initiation.

Drawing from her unique experiences working with master shamans as well as practicing as a psychotherapist, Irene Siegel discusses the evolving role of the therapist as both therapist and healer. Shamans are ancestral teachers, guides to nonordinary realms of consciousness and a divine cosmic whole within silent sacred spaces. Using lessons from native shamanic tradition and the evolving field of transpersonal psychology, both healer and client will learn to access the innate inner wisdom and healing potential within themselves through guided meditation exercises within moment-by-moment sacred space. The expanding content and context of therapy blends the two worlds: the clinical world and the world of the shaman.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A must read for therapists, healers, and clients alike who are interested in an insightful integration of transformational healing paradigms."
Creations Magazine

"[T]eaches therapists how to awaken their own spiritual consciousness and brings this awareness into psychotherapeutic process so that they can become an 'instrument of transformation'. . . . Richly illustrated with client cases. . . .
The Sacred Path of the Therapist is a significant contribution that I highly recommend for any level of clinician."
Journal of EMDR Practice and Research

"Dr. Irene R. Siegel offers the beginning therapist a foundational primer into the field of transpersonal psychotherapy. Using shamanic and modern healing methods, she encourages the awareness of divine spiritual interconnectedness that moves into a shared resonance with the client. Insightful exercises and client-based contributions give evidence to the benefits of transpersonal and EMDR psychotherapeutic methods. This is a must read for any student of transpersonal psychology and for therapists entering the field of service for the well-being of others."
Ana Perez-Chisti, PhD, President, Sufi Universal Fraternal Institute

"This is an outstanding book on the transpersonal approach to psychotherapy and takes the method much further than I have seen elsewhere. The author started her work in Peru in 1985, working with Alberto Villoldo. She had shamanic experiences and other nonordinary experiences. Later she studied EMDR, bringing it into alignment with those experiences, to the benefit of both. . . . Strongly recommended. "
John Rowan, PhD, FBPS, FBACP, cofounder of the UK Association for Humanistic Psychology Practitioners, author of The Transpersonal

"At last, a well-researched, well-written, and fun to read book on the intersection of Transpersonal Psychology, Sacred Wisdom, and EMDR! The reader will be drawn in by this scholarly yet accessible description of the history, tenets, and some practices of shamanism, and how this increasingly popular field can crossfertilize the field of psychology. Although the notion of psychotherapist as healer/spiritual teacher/shaman is not new, cutting edge psychology and psychotherapy today must include this spiritual dimension."
Sheila Krystal, PhD, Licensed Psychologist

"Irene Siegel offers an overview of the methods, theories and main proponents of transpersonal psychotherapy, a field that is gaining prominence for its vital assistance to those who seek to safely and full embody spiritual reality. She shows how spiritual awakening can be an outcome of optimal psychological health. Her book is intelligent, well-researched, and beautifully written."
Judith Blackstone, PhD, founder of the realization Process and author of Belonging Here, and The Empathic Ground

"Science and spirituality converge in
The Sacred Path of the Therapist as Irene Siegel explores the energetic aspects of therapist-client interaction as a key for clearing past traumas and emotional histories within a shared coherent field environment. Understanding energetic aspects of ourselves and others will unfold the next significant advancement in health and healing. The step-by-step tools provided will facilitate awakening of spiritual consciousness leading to true transformation. A must read for therapists and clients alike. "
Rollin McCraty, PhD, Director of Research, HeartMath Research Center

"I believe Dr. Siegel has tapped into a very large and very promising vein for research in transpersonal psychotherapy and I do hope she and many other will follow up and develop this work. I see many possible benefits in this future research for clients and practitioners of transpersonal psychotherapy and also for EMDR therapists and their clients. "

Irene R. Siegel, Ph.D., LCSW received her doctorate in Transpersonal Psychology from the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology (now Sofia Univ.); and her masters in Social Work from Columbia University. As an EMDRIA approved consultant, teacher, and conference speaker she introduces the innovative concept of integrating mindful awareness and resonance into the therapy process within a shared coherent field environment.

Her journey began as clinical supervisor in a psychiatric hospital when she was whisked away to Peru to study with Incan shamans in her early 30's. It was the beginning of her path of integrating ancient wisdom with modern healing, leading to her book, Eyes of the Jaguar. Now as a seasoned therapist she brings her knowledge to the reader in The Sacred Path of the Therapist: Modern Healing, Ancient Wisdom, and Client Transformation. East meets west as the therapist and healer become one and the same. A new paradigm of healing trauma while activating an awakening of consciousness emerges, changing the content and context of treatment.

An incredible blend of therapist and shaman perspective. This book has encouraged my growth as an EMDR therapist , human being and connectedness to energetic healing. Dr. Siegel blends the transpersonal approach with expanded awareness and nonordinary experience of shaman. There are exercises that create spaces for growth as an EMDR therapist and a spiritual practitioner within the framework of EMDR this is also a fun read with so much wisdom. I have learned and continue to utilize so much of this integration with clients and in my own work. This is a brilliant book!

I absolutely loved this book. As the title states, the path of the conscious psychotherapist is Sacred. This book honors this path and speaks to the many ways that spirit is part of our work in this field. I found this particularly useful personally as it inspired me to finally pursue training in EMDR. The integration of the transpersonal approach to EMDR was shown beautifully throughout this book. This was something that I needed to understand and “see” more deeply than just the neurological piece. Thank you Dr. Siegel

The Sacred Path of the Therapist is well researched and very useful for therapists and end users alike. I really appreciated the snippets from therapy sessions with all different kinds of people. Dr. Siegel explained both what was going on interpersonally in the therapy room, as well as the spiritual nature of healing trauma. A remarkable book that will change the industry forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone interested in exploring a transpersonal approach to their therapeutic work.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 29, 2018
This is an important and beautifully written book that embodies a transpersonal approach in therapeutic work. Based on her own clinical findings where she has researched the benefits of other therapists working in a transpersonal approach and with plenty of case examples, Irene Siegel take us down a path of discovery that illustrates how being open to spirituality can enable mult-dimensional healing for clients. She discusses the role of spiritual resonance in the therapeutic relationship to expand spiritual awareness and soul consciousness. In particular Irene provides compelling evidence for the power of working transpersonally when using EMDR with clients to process and heal traumas and life experiences. Irene provides details about the human energy fields including working with chakra energies and exercises are provided throughout the book to teach therapist how to incporate spiritual techniques within their practise. A must read for anyone interested in transpersonal and EMDR.
