I purchased this collection of Strand's poetry after reading a review in the New Yorker Magazine which also reviewed a new release of Robert Hass's works. Strand's poems are beautiful and thought provoking. He has a way of using words that I've never experienced before. One of my favorites, "Moontan," takes me away to a distant place that rings familiar. The same would be true with "The Good Life," which make me think about how short and unpredictable life is. I would recommend this book highly to those who love poetry or to those for whom this might be their first purchase of a book of poems. Strand is one of the great American poets. Nothing quite like curling up in an over stuffed leather chair in front of a fireplace with a glass of port and reading these poems while Bach's Cello Suites play in the background.

Strand's writing is elegant and lovely even when the subjects are dark (which is most of the time). His writing is clear, clean, spare, and introspective, with a touch of surrealism. He writes with a kind of laconic, ironic detachment, like Beckett, as if he were walking or writing and observing himself from the outside, from maybe somewhere over his own left shoulder.

This is an excellent selection from all the collections he published over the course of his career. Reading through it we get a sense of how he developed as a poet and as a man over the course of his lifetime, and also of what seems to be the essential Strand -- the detachment, the irony, the elegant sentences. Very highly recommended.

Strand's most recent collection provides a compelling selection of his brilliant poetry. The poems develop a haunting sense of a world ready to crack but one that is held together by the moral and aesthetic force of Strand's imagination. Some of the poems are puzzlers; most are the kind you want to read aloud to someone near you.

depressing middle-aged white folks poetry

I wanted to give him a real shot, but I still think he's an over rated. He seems vaguely mystical/philosophical, contrived and somewhat phony. Very little in the way of good concrete imagery, or experience I can relate to.

This is probably the best book of poetry I've ever stumbled upon.

After reading it, I am determined to meet this man, and I have been inspired to write more myself.

Just awesome.

In an age where the emphasis is of the entertained consumer, and their gratification, it could be considered that it’s miraculous anyone stops for poetry. Poetry requires a moment, but repays endlessly. It is not to be gobbled and then shuffled off for the next book, the next poem, at the time.

In Mark Strand’s work we have that refuge of understanding, that oasis of a paradise where words and perspectives meet and alter enlightening with each reading. We are in the presence not of someone who scrawls verse, panders to contemporary understandings, settles for trickery or entertainment, or simply someone who also happens to write poetry. We are honored to be in the presence of a Poet.

Reading Mark Strand’s work, you discover how words and speech influence thought and feeling, come round about again to influence perspective on the whole and in detail. How in a very short space of time you can experience worlds. This is his gift to us.

Without pride or ego, Mark Strand’s poetry gives an uncompromising confidence, revelation and renewed vitality through a fine, and subtle discovery of what is known, suspected, or simply undeclared. And by the interactions of his words, the delight of language.

Great poetry such as his instructs, teaches and involves without intrusion, embellishment or stale argument appealing to vanity. I come away feeling that poetry itself is a sacred trust. That those insights are my own.

Gratitude and appreciation are the most accurate notes when approaching the work of a great poet. The willingness to suspend disbelief, and the contemporary security of jaded cynicism.

Mark Strand’s work brings you back to what is great about poetry. Not the attitude of vanity, the easy but catered perspective of some contemporary forms, the history of schools, but the real things.

Just when you thought you might have known all there was to know about poetry and art, the power and the glory of it, you find Mark Strand’s work and know the discovery will thankfully continue.

We are honored by his work, blessed to reacquaint ourselves with these songs of a great Poet.

He was born here, right? I have long loved Mark Strand, since I first read a poem of his in university. Some milky poem about the moon, a night, a tree, a window and a house. So similar to so many of his other poems, but heartbreaking nonetheless in the moment you read it. If you love discovering new poets, this is a good collection to start with. If you're tired of the "old" poets, Mark Strand is "old", but his wide-reaching ideas and powerful words remain fresh. S***, poets are so important now more than ever!
