"Sound is more than simply a medium of artistic expression. Sound has practical and powerful applications in the real world."

Mantras, or simple chants, are short phrases packed with energy and intention--specifically designed to generate powerful sound waves that promote healing, insight, creativity, and spiritual growth. Healing Mantras is the practical, how-to guide that makes the strengths and benefits of mantras available to everyone. The transformative power of sound has been passed down to the present from the sages of India, the classical scientists of ancient Greece, and the medieval monks of Europe. Mantras, sounds, and chants have inspired, comforted, and mended the lives of individuals, religious orders, and even entire cultures. Even though the science and discipline of chanting and formal prayer are practiced in every religion around the world, this is the first time that ancient Sanskrit mantras have been explained and adapted to Western needs.

One of the few Western experts in Hindu and Buddhist mantras, Thomas Ashley-Farrand has practiced mantra-based spiritual disciplines for twenty-five years. In this illuminating book, he explains how and why mantras work and shows how to use them for everything from controlling habits to overcoming fear, from curing specific ailments to finding inner peace. In each of the more than fifty mantras, all translated from the original Sanskrit, Ashley-Farrand unlocks the power of every word, explains its appropriate application, and tells you how to pronounce it in easy-to-follow phonetic symbols. Inside, you'll find mantras for

- Health - Worldly Success - Habit Control - Protection - Grief - Anger - Controlling Fear - Personal Attraction - Wisdom - Concentration and Mental Clarity - Healing Life Issues - and more!

These mantras can be repeated aloud or in silence and can be used by people of any religion or spiritual practice, "as you wash dishes, as you drive on the freeway, as you meditate, or as you cook." Sound can help and sound can heal, and Healing Mantras now makes this sound medicine available to everyone.

Thomas Ashley-Farrand, Namadeva Acharya, (1940-2010) was one of the Western world's foremost authorities on the application of Sanskrit Mantra to life's problems. In December 2008 and June 2009, he and his wife received empowerments from Satguru Rama Mata, their lineage holder, to be gurus.

In 1968, Ashley-Farrand began having experiences of a mystical nature, which over the next few years became more intense and profound. He began to read the spiritual literature of the East, where he found eloquent explanations of his specific experiences in the Upanishads. In 1972, he received Kriya initiation from the Self Realization Fellowship. Mr. Ashley-Farrand began practicing extensive mantra-based spiritual disciplines in 1973, when he became a student of Sadguru Sant Keshavadas and Satguru Rama Mata. From 1973-1984, he was the priest for the Temple of Cosmic Religion (Sanatana Vishwa Dharma) in Washington, D.C., first as priest-in-residence where he performed ancient Sanskrit ceremonies (pujas) twice daily, and later as traveling priest based in Southern California. In 1974, he received initiation from Sadguru Sant Keshavadas into the universal mantra for spiritual illumination, the Gayatri Mantra, and other mystical formulas. He also received his spiritual name. He studied with Christian mystic Dr. Leon Wright of Howard University. In 1975, he received Tibetan spiritual empowerments from the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa.

In 1978, Namadeva Acharya journeyed to India with Sadguru Sant Keshavadas and Satguru Rama Mata, where he met a wide variety of spiritual teachers both famous and unknown. There he astonished swamis, pundits, shastris and others with his intonation and pronunciation of complex Sanskrit mantras, slokas and spiritual formulas. From one end of India to another, he was asked to demonstrate his mastery of this complex spiritual liturgy for assembled Indian spiritual teachers. Repeatedly, they told him that he had been a swami and guru in several lives in India. A highlight of his trip there came as he was blessed by two of the most prominent spiritual personages in all of India, each having spiritual authority over more than 150 million people, H. H. Pejor Math Swami, and Sri Sri Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati Maha Swamigal of Kanchi Peetham.

In 1982, when he moved to California with his wife, Margalo/Satyabhama, he conducted meditations and ceremonies in people's homes, local colleges and for various religious organizations. They received empowerments from Kalu Rimpoche, the Dalai Lama and Sakya Jetsun Chiney Luding (Jetsun Ma), a woman guru from Tibet.

In 2001 he became president of a new non-profit organization, Sanatana Dharma Satsang, Inc. Thomas and Margalo also formed Saraswati Publications, LLC, in 2001. In 2007, Sanatana Dharma Satsang opened a Gayatri Temple in Beaverton, Oregon. Satyabhama continues to manage both.

Thomas/Namadeva Acharya was a frequent lecturer for such organizations as the Theosophical Society of Long Beach, CA, and Astara, located in Upland, CA.

Namadeva Acharya's understanding and expertise in the disciplines of the ancient religious ceremonies [Puja (water) and Yajna (fire)] was almost unique among Westerners. Some of the ceremonies he performed can last as long as eight hours. In a departure from the enigmatic portrait of the mystic, Namadeva Acharya taught that "mysticism is the ultimate in personal practicality" and need not be a withdrawal from the world. He always maintained that an increasing ability to serve is the only reliable sign of spiritual progress.

Mr. Ashley-Farrand is the author of several books and audio programs including Healing Mantras, Shakti Mantras (Ballantine Wellspring,) Chakra Mantras (Weiser Books, 2006), Mantra: Sacred Words of Power (a 9-hr. workshop), several other CDs and Mantra Meditation (a Book/CD) (Sounds True), Mantra Therapy Healing Intensives, Gayatri Mantra Meditation, Mantras of the Goddess and more (Saraswati Publications), The Ancient Science of Sanskrit Mantra and Ceremony (in three volumes, plus 3 CD sets of recorded mantras, slokas, astottaras, etc.) and other works. This last book for advanced students contains over 4,000 mantras and is the most comprehensive book on transliterated Sanskrit mantra in the English language. In 2007, he published an extensive Teacher of Mantra Manual, which is a self-study course. After passing an examination, the students are certified as Instructors of Mantra by Sanatana Dharma Satsang, Inc. and are considered as ministers.

For more information about his many works, see the website, www.sanskritmantra.com.

Mr. Ashley-Farrand regularly led retreats at Kripalu in Massachusetts and Far Horizons in California and other locations and taught workshops regularly in the US, Canada and London. With experience in the broadcasting industry, he was a producer-director for a Washington, D.C., television station, taught broadcasting and communications courses as a full-time faculty member of George Washington University, and was vice president for a privately held television company in Washington, D.C. From 1982-99, he was a management and marketing consultant based in Southern California with clients in the health care and computer technology industries. His marketing and management experience included large scale efforts for the United States Army and a national foundation.

Mr. Ashley-Farrand earned a BA from Ripon College and an MA from Marquette University. In 1981, he was married to Margalo Ashley-Farrand in a ceremony by both Sadguru Sant Keshavadas and Satguru Rama Mata in Maryland. They subsequently resided in Southern California from 1982-2006, then they moved near Portland, Oregon.

Purchased this book years ago and last year started using the Narasimha Mantra for noisy, party throwing neighbors. Though it took awhile, about a few months, the naughty neighbor finally moved away after years of frustration. I don't think it was a coincidence. Very pleased with those results and will continue to use various mantras.

The CD “Healing Mantras” by Thomas Ashley-Farrand is a series of beautiful mantras, most of which are Hindu. The CD contains twenty-eight tracks, many of which also include brief introductions to each mantra, its history, its significance, its traditional purpose, its translation, and how to pronounce the words, ending with one track consisting solely of meditative instrumental Indian music. In addition to the lyrics of the various chants, the liner notes also includea glossary of terms and a bibliography of additional resources. I had heard this CD for the first time a few years ago when I began attending chanting and meditation retreats led by a friend of mine, Susan Atchison, who is a professional counselor, therapist and spiritual healer who primarily specializes in various forms of spiritual healing from various religions and spiritual traditions. I have attended chanting and meditation retreats with her for the past few years. Before the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and before she decided to move away, her place of business, a place called Healing Soul, was a couple streets down from my house, and each retreat would be once a month, but now, in addition to the group events, she and I do weekly chanting/meditation retreats together over Zoom every Saturday afternoon. While I enjoy listening to all of the chants on this CD, our meditation/chant group only tends to chant certain mantras based on what month and/or season it is. By contrast, the individual sessions I do with Susan consist of different chant/meditation programs every time. This is why, while I have heard some of these chants before, there are many others which are new to me. I have also heard “Om Ayim Saraswatiye” before because the famous American-born Hindu convert and Grammy-nominated chant artist, Krishna Das, has chanted this particular mantra as what is known as a “kirtan” (a call-and-response chant) on his CD, “Kirtan Wallah.” This CD is ideal for chanting, meditation, prayer, stress relief, spiritual healing, or simply just listening to if you just want to relax.

I adore this book! It has opened so many doors for me in my personal life as well as my spiritual practice, that I just can't speak highly enough of it.

I have used the techniques in this book for a wide variety of purposes over the past 7 years. I deepened by connection to and relationship with the many of the divinities and spiritual forces presented in this book, and in Shakti Mantras by the same author. I have also literally transformed my life by applying the methods and mantras presented here to the various challenges that I faced - in health, in relationship, in finances, in career, and in just about every other aspect of my life that you can imagine.

I often get asked for good resources for learning more about mantras and about starting a mantra practice, and I always point people to this book first. Thomas Ashley-Farrand (may he rest in peace) has a true gift for making what can be a very complex subject easily accessible and understandable to those new to the topic *without* dumbing it down into useless fluff. He also makes the subject matter come alive and be very easily approached and embraced.

I've had this book for years and I still pull it out and refer to it several times each year. Each time I open it up, I find something new that I can incorporate into my practice. Whenever I have a challenge in life, I pull out this and his other book Shakti Mantras for a place to start working spiritually towards the resolution. I am never disappointed!

I learned about this author, when Mark, the Yoga Instructor, told my friend and me that he uses the prayer beads I noticed hanging around his neck, to recite mantras. I told him about the prayer beads I had made during my March 2014 temple stay at Beomeo temple in South Korea, and then I wanted to know where he learned about mantras. He wrote Thomas Ashley-Farrand's name on a post-it note for each of us.

Early on in the book, Ashley-Farrand describes the many cultures and religions, practicing some form of mantra for centuries and the ancient language used for mantras.

One of the first mantras he shares is to counterbalance limiting karma. I started reciting it as soon as I came to it. The next mantra I started was a healing mantra with my husband, who suffers from acute back pain. I could never have guessed what followed my reciting this healing mantra. A woman from India, a stranger to me, started talking to me about body aches and her secret (tapioca); the day after I had spent a night with my own hip pain. I was surprised, even though I do believe in synchronicity. I wrote about in my book,
Learning to Be You; It's an Inside Job: Recovery and Healing for the Loved Ones of the Substance-Addicted . Ashley-Farrand also writes about it in this book, he writes that in the Far East this phenomenon is called upaguru.

I've now settled on reciting a mantra for an inner condition. This mantra has three phases, the initial to heal the inner condition (Ashley-Farrand shares a list of 21 inner conditions, examples are: anger, shame, fear, grief); phase two of the series is the mantra for salve, phase three is for the new skin or bandage.

There are so many mantras, like me, you may not know where to begin. The author shares that it was his reciting mantras that supported him in writing this book. I think you will agree that the mantra worked, since this book has become a next step on my spiritual journey. I liked it so much I bought a book for my grown children, who strung their own prayer beads with me during the temple stay, and another book with
108 Wood Beads Buddhist Prayer Meditation Wrist Mala Necklace  for my dear friend who took me to Mark's yoga class, while I was in Houston on business.
