Growing Musicians: Teaching Music in Middle School and Beyond focuses on teaching adolescents within the context of a music classroom, regardless of content area (orchestra, band, choir, or general music). It provides a look at the importance of music courses in the lives of adolescents as they navigate the path between being a child and an adult. As every music student is completely unique, there is no one-size-fits-all prescriptive way of working with this age group. Rather, music educators must approach adolescents with high musical standards and aspirations to learn and achieve within music; a willingness to honor the individuality of each adolescent musician; a sense of structure, but an ability to be flexible; a desire to foster and promote a safe classroom environment where students feel empowered to be themselves and speak openly about what they think and believe; an understanding that music classes are not only safe places where students learn how to become better musicians but also better people through musical experiences focused on humanity and empathy; and a dose of humor, or at least the ability to acknowledge that adolescents are extremely funny whether or not they realize it. In addition, this book encourages pre-service and practicing music educators to mindfully examine and better understand their own teaching practices.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Sweet gets at the very heart of working with adolescents in the music classroom. From handling the physical and emotional changes of this age group to the essential leadership role a nurturing music teacher can provide, this text guides readers on a journey to establishing a positive classroom climate that makes the most of these growing musicians. This is an absolutely essential text for anyone who might just be lucky enough to end up teaching in the middle."--Ann C. Clements, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Music Education, Pennsylvania State University

"Dr. Sweet's book is an important resource for music teachers, music teacher educators, and students preparing to teach. Foregrounding the richness and complexities of teachers' voices, Dr. Sweet examines topics and insights critical to understanding and working effectively with adolescents. She eloquently captures the spirited, loving, and multi-dimensional souls of adolescent musicians, their struggles and successes, and thoughtfully proposes pathways for teachers to support their futures."--Elizabeth Cassidy Parker, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Music Education, Temple University

"There is a particularly novel and highly useful element included in this book, namely the reflections and comments of a group of middle school music teachers who represent
a cross-section of those engaged in working with adolescents. Their anecdotes, tips, and humorous stories provide insights from those in the field. Many music educators will
agree that the best kind of professional development comes from observing and interacting with peers who do the same job, an all-too-infrequent occasion, yet one that frequently
leads to professional growth. Reading Sweet's book makes one feel as though these colleagues are sitting with us, reading along and commenting. This feature, along with
the author's clear writing style, make this a valuable volume, not just for middle school teachers, but for those teaching any level." --

Sweet's work is dynamic and engaging, based in sound research yet not jargony or overly academic, and loaded with real-world examples from current, active teachers of diverse backgrounds. Her voice, use of humor, and easy-to-follow organizational structure makes reading flow easily and naturally.

Every student goes through adolescence. It can be disarming and frightening for them, and challenging for their teachers and parents. "Growing Musicians" takes an in-depth look at this difficult time and allows the reader to feel profound empathy for students in this situation and, perhaps more importantly, to view adolescence in a positive, hopeful way.

This book should be in the hands of every current music teacher in the country, at every level. It should also be a required text for every collegiate introductory methods course at every university, not only for its breadth of knowledge, but also for its accessibility, its relevance, and its overall ability to impact the reader intellectually and emotionally. It is truly a gem of the music education profession that will stand the test of time.

If you are a middle school music teacher of adolescents or a pre-service teacher, this is simply a must-read. This book is practical, heart-felt, sincere, and philosophical. Through this book, Dr. Sweet and the teachers she interviewed, provided me practical and quick changes I could make in my classroom to improve my craft while simultaneously giving me the opportunity to think about the broader philosophical choices I am making in the music classroom. Finally, this book affirms my work as a professional. I love teaching Middle School music and Dr. Sweet celebrates this job that, while often maligned, is indeed full of growth, daily challenges, love, loyalty, humor, and creativity. READ THIS BOOK!

My professor for my first intensive course on music education in the public schools added this as a required text for the course. She spoke at the beginning of the semester about what a great and inspiring read it was. She had made similar statements about many books before that hardly captured my interest, but in the first pages of Bridget Sweet's Growing Musicians, I was hooked.

I am about the enter my final year of my bachelor's degree in music education, and reading this book has entirely changed my perspective on working with adolescents in the setting of a music classroom. Sweet provides valuable insights on several approaches to music education in adolescence from many seasoned teachers. I have been introduced to many concepts I had not previously considered in my reading of this incredible work.

Until now, teaching young adolescent students seemed a daunting task that I was uncertain if I was willing to approach. Now, with a better grasp on the challenges but also the incredible reward one faces in working with this age group, I find myself reinvigorated, eager to nurture my future students with the concepts I have taken away from this read. Thank you, Dr. Sweet, for changing my life as an educator.
