About the Author

Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was born in Wales of Norwegian parents. He spent his childhood in England and, at age eighteen, went to work for the Shell Oil Company in Africa. When World War II broke out, he joined the Royal Air Force and became a fighter pilot. At the age of twenty-six he moved to Washington, D.C., and it was there he began to write. His first short story, which recounted his adventures in the war, was bought by The Saturday Evening Post, and so began a long and illustrious career.

After establishing himself as a writer for adults, Roald Dahl began writing children’s stories in 1960 while living in England with his family. His first stories were written as entertainment for his own children, to whom many of his books are dedicated.

Roald Dahl is now considered one of the most beloved storytellers of our time. Although he passed away in 1990, his popularity continues to increase as his fantastic novels, including James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, The BFG, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, delight an ever-growing legion of fans.

    The son of Norwegian parents, Roald Dahl was born in Wales in 1916 and educated at Repton. He was a fighter pilot for the RAF during World War Two, and it was while writing about his experiences during this time that he started his career as an author.

    His fabulously popular children's books are read by children all over the world. Some of his better-known works include James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr Fox, Matilda, The Witches, and The BFG.

    He died in November 1990.

From the brilliant mind that gave us "James and the Giant Peach," "Matilda," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and many others comes this lesser-known book that I grew up with. I adored this book as a kid, though beware, as the rhymes are indeed "revolting" and some include language that I'm not comfortable reading aloud to my third and fourth grade students ("slut" being one that comes to mind in this version of Cinderella). With some minor alterations, however, this book makes many laughs and is a cherished part of my Dahl collection.

If you've got a slightly dark sense of humor and a love for unadulterated Dahl's work you will love this book. These rhymes are hilarious versions of the fairy tales we all love, but those who are expecting rainbows and unicorns will be appalled. Example: in Cinderella's tale one of the ugly sisters is beheaded and that's just for starters.
I however love this book and always have. Even as a child it made me laugh. I loved it. Got it again as a birthday treat to myself because my old copy is in terrible condition. But when I was a kid I read everything and anything so I am not a good example.
If you're thinking about getting the Rhymes for a kid maybe check it out before you make a present of it. Some kids may be "traumatized" and some parents may be offended. Baffles me but that's people for you.
However I can't recommend it enough to those who just love a good laugh. Especially if you can appreciate beautiful poetry too. The original illustrations typical of Dahl's work are another delight of this edition too.
