Miami attorney Jack Swyteck lands in the heart of the contentious immigration debate when he takes on the heart-wrenching case of an undocumented immigrant who fled to America to protect her daughter and save herself, in this timely and pulse-pounding thriller that explores the stories behind the headlines from New York Times bestselling author James Grippando, winner of the Harper Lee Prize for Legal Fiction.

Julia Rodriguez and her teenage daughter Beatriz escaped bloodthirsty gangs, random violence and, Julia's abusive husband back in El Salvador. Arriving in Miami, mother and daughter struggled to carve their own piece of the American dream. While life in the States is hard, it is safer, until Julia's rejects her boss's unwanted sexual advances. Suddenly—thanks to an "anonymous" tip to U. S. immigration authorities—she is arrested, locked in detention with criminals, and slated for deportation. Jack's only viable legal move to save her is asylum—a long shot that’s become nearly impossible in today’s charged political climate.

When Julia and Beatriz made the perilous trek north to freedom, they thought they’d left the danger behind them. But now, even Miami isn’t safe. A ruthless enemy may have tracked them to south Florida and is biding time, patiently waiting to strike.

In a case where the stakes have never been higher, Jack Sywteck may not be able to save his client—even if he wins.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Pulling current events into a tense, action-filled plot is… a specialty of James Grippando. [He] knows how to create a suspenseful plot in which every scene is believable. . . . sculpt[ing] harrowing scenes as he makes us care very much about each character.” — South Florida Sun-Sentinel

“Both a thrilling page-turner and a story about love, family, and survival.” — The Big Thrill

“Grippando focuses on building a plot around a deadly situation with terrific characters and scenes so tensely written that I was literally breathless by the finale. . . . The Girl in the Glass Box is a great and pertinent legal thriller that pulls out all the stops straight through to the fiery climax.” — Bookreporter.com

The Girl in the Glass Box is now Grippando’s most thrilling [novel].  It moves fast and is like the prose equivalent of an action movie car chase. . . . one of the most effectively thrilling legal thrillers that I have ever read.” — ComicBookBin.com

“Grippando weaves immigration law and policy, domestic abuse, and other current social issues into a story that will quickly capture and keep the attention of readers who may be compelled to read this plot-driven legal thriller in one sitting.” — Library Journal (starred review)

Praise for James Grippando: “Grippando, a former attorney, has the legal stuff down cold, and his writing style is impeccable. This would be a perfect time for legal-thriller fans who haven’t yet checked out this series to join the crowd.” — Booklist

“Grippando is equally skillful at ratcheting up the tension and plucking at your heartstrings.” — Kirkus Reviews

“Timely...Grippando keeps the narrative moving forward at a steady clip, expertly interweaving each character’s point of view into the plot...[and] keeps the tension building to a heart-racing climax.” — Publishers Weekly

Loved the suspense, and that I learned something new about how many unfortunate people in other countries are forced to live. I found myself explaining parts of this book to other people several times because they moved me or astounded me so much. It talks about what it’s like to flee from war torn, gang controlled countries, the issues faced when dealing with ICE, and other struggles immigrants face. In today’s world, these are things we all can stand to learn something about. Jack Swytek’s character is always getting into deep situations and this plot is no exception. There are twists and turns and plenty of wondering what’s coming next. The characters are, as always, rich and complex and there’s plenty of subtle humor between the action.

I really liked that the daughter had found out from her teacher that if ICE shows up @ your door then just don’t answer the door. What I don’t like is that stupid Julia has to start packing a suitcase to go to her sisters who has no room & the daughter forgets her book in the house & runs back to get it & instead of going w/her ICE comes around corner throws her down on ground & off she goes to jail. She could’ve come back in middle of night to to get her book when ICE wouldn’t be there. That was weak, very weak. Other than that it was riveting!

James Grippando’s Jack Swyteck series is great. In this episode a very critical issue is front
and center – Immigration. Illegal immigration is a legal, national security, financial and humanitarian
problem. However you view illegal immigration, many of the people who try to get into America
are so desparate they are willing to risk deportation, and even death. Whatever they are fleeing is that bad.
Julia Rodriguez and her daughter [ the Girl in the Glass Box ] are some of these unfortunate people.
Jack is dragged into representing the 2 by his Cuban immigrant grandmother. This is a gripping legal
thriller like the rest of the Jack Swyteck stories. Some of the technicalities of immigration law will make
your head spin.

I’ve read almost all of Grippando’s novels and have greatly enjoyed them, including The Girl in the Glass Box. As a lawyer, I have represented numerous asylum seekers, immigrants and refugees pro bono in immigration courts for the last four years; in fact, it is the only legal work that I do. In light of some of the other comments, I just wanted to say that Grippando’s portrayal of practicing immigration law before immigration judges, dealing with DHS attorneys and ICE personnel, detention issues (especially the use of privately-owned detention companies and clients getting moved around and attorneys trying to find their clients) is spot-on accurate and real-life -- neither sensationalistic nor one-sided.

I have read this entire series and this book was just disappointing. I almost did not buy it after reading some of the reviews but since I have always enjoyed the Swyteck series, I decided to buy it. I should have listened to the reviews. First, Jake's personality is basically non existent in this book. This was really more of a diatribe on the immigration system and policies than a legal thriller. Many of the situations are simply unrealistic particularly in the timeframe allotted. Many situations particularly with the 2 male characters seemed unrealistic and really forced. The whole book makes little sense and the main female character is not likeable. The name of the book is a misnomer as it is really not about the girl in the glass box which was a total overreach and then suddenly the topic is dropped. The resignation syndrome- really?? If it want to read about immigration and its issues, I can watch TV, read the news etc. - I do not want to read it a novel particularly when it is presented in a totally one sided manner.

Grippando’s character, Jack Swyteck, is a lawyer with scruples & integrity; fighting for justice for those who have little hope . Grippando always manages to flesh out Swyteck ‘s character while spinning a cliff-hanger tale.

The immigration problems we face today at our southern borders open your eyes to the problems faced by the illegal immigrants coming into America today. They have a hard battle if they come illegally. The wait to get in is a long hard one. Some countries don’t take care of their own. So for many getting in any way they can is all the see. Wonderful story from a great wordsmith. A must read for an understanding facing immigration.

James Grippando is one of my favorite authors and this book does not disappoint. I live in Miami and I love the diversity here. Grippando writes about current immigration problems and picks a storyline that exemplifies how difficult our immigration laws are. He writes about the bad and the good. Jack and Theo try to help a young mother with a young teenage girl to escape from a domestic violence situation that gets them all into trouble. The ending left us hanging so I am hoping there is a sequel. I enjoyed the book.
