From MSNBC correspondent Steve Kornacki, a lively and sweeping history of the birth of political tribalism in the 1990s—one that brings critical new understanding to our current political landscape from Clinton to Trump

In The Red and the Blue, cable news star and acclaimed journalist Steve Kornacki follows the twin paths of Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich, two larger-than-life politicians who exploited the weakened structure of their respective parties to attain the highest offices. For Clinton, that meant contorting himself around the various factions of the Democratic party to win the presidency. Gingrich employed a scorched-earth strategy to upend the permanent Republican minority in the House, making him Speaker.

The Clinton/Gingrich battles were bare-knuckled brawls that brought about massive policy shifts and high-stakes showdowns—their collisions had far-reaching political consequences. But the ’90s were not just about them.  Kornacki writes about Mario Cuomo’s stubborn presence around Clinton’s 1992 campaign; Hillary Clinton’s star turn during the 1998 midterms, seeding the idea for her own candidacy; Ross Perot’s wild run in 1992 that inspired him to launch the Reform Party, giving Donald Trump his first taste of electoral politics in 1999; and many others.

With novelistic prose and a clear sense of history, Steve Kornacki masterfully weaves together the various elements of this rambunctious and hugely impactful era in American history, whose effects set the stage for our current political landscape.

Brilliantly maps the road to our current deeply-poisoned politics

Brilliantly maps the road to our current deeply-poisoned politics
This is an excellent work which focuses on the political changes of the 1990s and how they helped set the tone for our current toxic politics. In that decade, a number of politicians saw new opportunities to take the low road in politics as a way of advancing their careers. Political behavior often appeared substantially more brutal and cutthroat as veneers of comity slipped away. Additionally, conspiracy theories, unsupported by serious evidence, became stunningly popular, especially when advanced by conservative "talk" radio. Such radio programs were widely treated as gospel by the right and viewed as the ravings of a bunch of kooks by the left. I recognize that historians can point to many other instances of highly partisan politics dating back to the Jefferson-Adams presidential campaign, but in the 1990s we saw a substantial uptick in the blending of toxic partisanship with the technology of mass communications available to almost everyone. This is of course a continuing trend.A number of important personalities are discussed in the book including individuals such as President Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Newt Gingrich, Mario Cuomo, Jesse Jackson, Pat Buchanan, and others. I taught college level American government in the 1990s, and thought Kornacki did a particularly good job in capturing the often visceral Republican hatred of Bill Clinton at the time, and their frequent willingness to believe virtually anything bad about him from any source. Ironically, this process may have benefited Clinton since any legitimate accusation against him could easily be lost in the maze of bizarre conspiracy theories, such as the so-called "murder" of Vince Foster. Kornacki also notes Hillary Clinton's unfortunate decision to walk directly into a Republican punch by claiming a "vast right-wing conspiracy." I have no doubt that she meant every word of that statement, but it did not do her any political good to say so.Some reviewers have raised legitimate concerns about the large number of newspaper articles in Kornacki’s endnotes, but this is probably not a serious problem. Often journalists, such as Kornacki, are told a great deal "on background" or even "deep background" where they cannot reveal the sources, no matter how strong those sources may be. Thus, in a book length manuscript they often cite secondary sources that make the same point as their original source. I have done this myself in academic writing because I did not want to betray the confidential original source of my information. Also, Kornacki has some experienced and exceptionally intelligent people listed in his acknowledgements (at the back of the book) who helped him while writing the book. Whatever his sources of support and useful feedback, he has produced a deeply insightful study that is both nuanced and packed with facts. I strongly recommend this book.

I am convinced. It took some time but I am convinced that political reading is every bit as interesting and entertaining as any other genre of books. The political section of the bookstore used to have an invisible sign saying KEEP OUT. Now I see PLEASE ENTER.

It started with a little flicker of warmth after reading Political Tribes by Amy Chua. I loved that book but I wasn’t sure if my crush was on the subject matter or the author. Then I read Fear by Bob Woodward, another gem. I felt myself being converted. Now this outstanding book and the conversion is complete—I’m a believer.

Steve Kornacki did an incredible job with this book. The Red and the Blue isn’t just politics it’s political history which makes it a double negative. Politics and history are often two very somniferous topics. Somehow, Kornacki was able to make both fascinating.

It did help that it was recent history, meaning the majority of the people and events written about occurred and lived during my lifetime. In fact, when reading about Clinton, Gingrich, and other characters and events from the 90’s it was a trip down memory lane. But Kornacki provided the lesser known details to provide context and foundation for the headline events. It was absolutely fabulous. He hit on highlights and provided just enough information to make the reader informed but not too much as to make the reader infirmed—as in bored sick. Political books were a hit with me this year and Kornacki closed the deal.

As a young man in his early 20s I have really appreciated the narrative and history lesson on politics of the 70s through 90s and the evolution of the political candidates from their young career to their higher profile jobs and roles. I tend to be lost quickly when my relatives and parents discuss politics from the 80s and 90s or just feel not informed on that time frame since history classes in school only go up to Vietnam War then jump to Cold War and 9/11 but completely skip over other meaningful events and public discourse of the last 20 years of the 20th century in America so I have learned alot! Who doesn't love Steve Kornacki and his personality so even if you just love his Kornacki Khakis and his ability to engage the viewer on the nerdy stats of politics, buy the book!

This was a really informative overview of how American political tribalism came of age in the 1990s, starting with the rise of key players in the late 1970s and ending with the 2000 election. Overall, I would say it as a really good play-by-play of the major events that led to the rise of key figures like Newt Gingrich and Bill & Hillary Clinton, along with a host of supporting players (Mario Cuomo, George H.W. Bush, Ross Perot, Pat Buchanan, etc.). The narrative moves along quite well, and is easy to follow for the most part. I certainly learned things about the rise of Newt Gingrich and how he, more than anyone else, used insurgent tactics (and C-SPAN) to re-define the way Congress works, leading its devolution into a hyper-partisan institution focused on brinksmanship and scandal. It was also the first time I read about the role insurgent Republicans played in the weakness of George H.W. Bush's re-election bid, and goes deeply into the lasting impact of Ross Perot and Pat Buchanan. Finally, I tend to remember Bill Clinton's presidency as being relatively successful (minus the impeachment/sexual scandals in the late 90s), but this is a good reminder that his early administration was plagued by a lack of progress progress, avoidable blunders, and significant intra-party fighting.

While absolutely worth reading, the book is not a piece of historical or political analysis, which I do think is a significant flaw. If you are a serious student of history or politics or remember this era well, it might read more as a play-by-play without really delving deeper into the rationale or fallout behind certain certain decisions. This sometimes results in the reader being underwhelmed or surprised by events. For example, with all the focus the book spent on Newt Gingrich's rise, it seemed like treated his actual speakership and downfall as a bit of an afterthought. This also makes me wonder if Kornacki is over-attributing the nation's current political tribalism to a series of limited anecdotal events and actors in the 1990s, when in reality these issues are significantly more complex and nuanced.

Still, the book is a really great effort, enjoyable to read, and I certainly learned a great deal. I believe it is a good level-setting book and jumping off point to explore more about American politics of the 1990s.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding explanation of how US politics arrived in the poor state of today
Reviewed in Germany on January 23, 2019
This is an outstanding survey of US politics during the 1990s describing both the rise of Bill Clinton as well as Newt Gingrich's politics of confrontation and non-cooperation. It also discusses fringe players at the time like Ross Perot and Pat Buchannan as well as Trump's first considerations of running for president.

The book helps people understand why our politics are the way they are today. They also show how much Trump seems to be a copycat of Buchannan. Although Trump criticized Buchannan for his racism and anti-Gay positions at the time, he appears to have copied Buchannan's main anti-immigration and anti-globalization messaging.

The book is very well written and is very entertaining as well as informative. It is a must read for political junkies.
