The Red and the Blue: The 1990s and the Birth of Political Tribalism Hardcover – October 2, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
From MSNBC correspondent Steve Kornacki, a lively and sweeping history of the birth of political tribalism in the 1990s—one that brings critical new understanding to our current political landscape from Clinton to Trump
In The Red and the Blue, cable news star and acclaimed journalist Steve Kornacki follows the twin paths of Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich, two larger-than-life politicians who exploited the weakened structure of their respective parties to attain the highest offices. For Clinton, that meant contorting himself around the various factions of the Democratic party to win the presidency. Gingrich employed a scorched-earth strategy to upend the permanent Republican minority in the House, making him Speaker.
The Clinton/Gingrich battles were bare-knuckled brawls that brought about massive policy shifts and high-stakes showdowns—their collisions had far-reaching political consequences. But the ’90s were not just about them. Kornacki writes about Mario Cuomo’s stubborn presence around Clinton’s 1992 campaign; Hillary Clinton’s star turn during the 1998 midterms, seeding the idea for her own candidacy; Ross Perot’s wild run in 1992 that inspired him to launch the Reform Party, giving Donald Trump his first taste of electoral politics in 1999; and many others.
With novelistic prose and a clear sense of history, Steve Kornacki masterfully weaves together the various elements of this rambunctious and hugely impactful era in American history, whose effects set the stage for our current political landscape.

It started with a little flicker of warmth after reading Political Tribes by Amy Chua. I loved that book but I wasn’t sure if my crush was on the subject matter or the author. Then I read Fear by Bob Woodward, another gem. I felt myself being converted. Now this outstanding book and the conversion is complete—I’m a believer.
Steve Kornacki did an incredible job with this book. The Red and the Blue isn’t just politics it’s political history which makes it a double negative. Politics and history are often two very somniferous topics. Somehow, Kornacki was able to make both fascinating.
It did help that it was recent history, meaning the majority of the people and events written about occurred and lived during my lifetime. In fact, when reading about Clinton, Gingrich, and other characters and events from the 90’s it was a trip down memory lane. But Kornacki provided the lesser known details to provide context and foundation for the headline events. It was absolutely fabulous. He hit on highlights and provided just enough information to make the reader informed but not too much as to make the reader infirmed—as in bored sick. Political books were a hit with me this year and Kornacki closed the deal.
While absolutely worth reading, the book is not a piece of historical or political analysis, which I do think is a significant flaw. If you are a serious student of history or politics or remember this era well, it might read more as a play-by-play without really delving deeper into the rationale or fallout behind certain certain decisions. This sometimes results in the reader being underwhelmed or surprised by events. For example, with all the focus the book spent on Newt Gingrich's rise, it seemed like treated his actual speakership and downfall as a bit of an afterthought. This also makes me wonder if Kornacki is over-attributing the nation's current political tribalism to a series of limited anecdotal events and actors in the 1990s, when in reality these issues are significantly more complex and nuanced.
Still, the book is a really great effort, enjoyable to read, and I certainly learned a great deal. I believe it is a good level-setting book and jumping off point to explore more about American politics of the 1990s.

The book helps people understand why our politics are the way they are today. They also show how much Trump seems to be a copycat of Buchannan. Although Trump criticized Buchannan for his racism and anti-Gay positions at the time, he appears to have copied Buchannan's main anti-immigration and anti-globalization messaging.
The book is very well written and is very entertaining as well as informative. It is a must read for political junkies.
