The Living Planet Paperback – Import, December 1, 1985

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 70 ratings

The second of the author's "Life" trilogy of books which accompanies the television series, "The Living Planet". In this book the author describes how the animals and plants that inhabit the earth fit together into the living world. Travelling from the wasteland of the Arctic to the riches of the tropical rain forests, he uses each chapter to visit a different habitat and describe its own complement of plants and animals. In each habitat there are plants or animals who have become specialized in their fight to make the best use of their surroundings. This has resulted in a wide variety of animals - some that are commonplace, some that are fish which walk on land, snakes that fly, flightless birds that graze like deer, or bears which grow hair on the soles of their feet.

Sir David Attenborough is Britain's best-known natural history film-maker. His career as a naturalist and broadcaster has spanned nearly five decades and there are very few places on the globe that he has not visited.

Sir David's first job - after Cambridge University and two years in the Royal Navy - was at the London publishing house Hodder & Stoughton. Then in 1952 he joined the BBC as a trainee producer and it was while working on the Zoo Quest series (1954-64) that he had his first opportunity to undertake expeditions to remote parts of the globe to capture intimate footage of rare wildlife in its natural habitat.

He was Controller of BBC2 (1965-68), during which time he introduced colour television to Britain, then Director of Programmes for the BBC (1969-1972). However in 1973 he abandoned administration altogether to return to documentary-making and writing.

Over the last 25 years he has established himself as the world's leading natural history programme maker with several landmark BBC series, including Life on Earth (1979), The Living Planet (1984), The Trials of Life (1990), The Private Life of Plants (1995), Life of Birds (1998), Life of Mammals (2002) and Life in the Undergrowth (2005). Sir David is a Trustee of the British Museum and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew; an Honorary Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge; a Fellow of the Royal Society and was knighted in 1985.

For a book written in the 80s it is still one of the most valid scientific books about our wonderful planet. I will continue to read this book and will keep it for future reference!

the book came in on time and is in decent condition. It is an older version of what I was looking for. It did not have a cover which was stated. Some chapters were not updated because it was an older version. For the price, it was not a bad deal.

I have spent hours reading and rereading the awesome splendor of our planet explained in everyday language and stunning pictures. Highly recommend this book to anyone seeking everyday answers to how our planet and it's inhabitants thrive.

This probably made a cracking television series, going by the pictures and detailed descriptions of what I imagine is being presented.

However, it does not make a particularly good read for leisure and, at times, almost verges on being a text book.

I also have the feeling that much of it has just been taken from reference books.

One way of making it more palatable is to read it in short takes rather than large gulps, as if you were watching the television series.

David Attenborough is a global treasure. This exceedingly well-written and edited book (not one typo) is a perfect way to introduce young people to a more mature analysis of the natural world. The prose is precise and clear, the topics wide-ranging and detailed, and all the while, you hear Attenborough's voice narrating in your head. There are also pictures! Plenty of pictures! Pictures of crystalline angler-fish, and enormous whale sharks, and penguins, guanays, deserts, forests, insects, the Sears Tower, etc. They serve as a visual feast to accompany the text.

A book like this cannot help but to instill knowledge and appreciation into the reader for the vast habitation we call Planet Earth.

This book reads just like a conversation and the photography is out of this world! I wish they would make some of the photos into poster form, they are so lovely. Of course, there are also the wierd looking animals and the ugly ones. All are so interesting. While you would think that it would be like reading a text-book, it is NOT! It's highly entertaining and immensely informative. I use mine as a coffee table book and I get so many comments on it!
